Re: Categories on characters redirect
There's a bit of a longstanding consensus not to put rather broad categories i.e. LGBT ones on redirects for fictional character, especially gaming situations like say Mario or whatnot where there are multitudes of characters, as this results in a bloat of such categories by redirects alone (case in point, imagine it with every Pokemon).
A key exception has been when the target is pointing to another article (such as a joint article between two or more characters) Kung Fu Man (talk) 00:21, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- Makes sense. If the problem is category bloat, my understanding is that this is only really an issue with really broad categories like "fictional students" or "fictional teens". Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the category is narrowly-defined and has relatively few members, I think it can actually significantly aid in navigation when placed on a fictional character redirect. For example, it seems appropriate to categorize Noelle Holiday into Category:Lesbian characters in video games (a recently created category) instead of Category:Fictional lesbians, and categorizing Reimu Hakurei into Category:Fictional miko seems appropriate because of the specificity (there are not that many fictional miko). - In theory, yes. In practice, what ends up happening is other editors don't understand where that 'sweet spot' is and start adding more in trying to be helpful. Ultimately, at least with the video game character end, consensus has been that the better route has been to keep the "[series] redirects" category if it's pointing to a list or game.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 01:36, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
