Recent changes
Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. - The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports
wikitextas a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such ashtml5,moin, andhtml+handlebars, can now be replaced. - Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses
preload=MediaWiki:July.
Problems
- Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities.
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review.
Future changes
- During the next year, MediaWiki will stop using IP addresses to identify logged-out users, and will start automatically assigning unique temporary usernames. Read more at IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Updates. You can join the discussion about the format of the temporary usernames.
- There will be an A/B test on 10 Wikipedias where the Vector 2022 skin is the default skin. Half of logged-in desktop users will see an interface where the different parts of the page are more clearly separated. You can read more.
jquery.tipsywill be removed from the MediaWiki core. This will affect some user scripts. Many lines with.tipsy(can be commented out.OO.ui.PopupWidgetcan be used to keep things working like they are now. You can read more and read about how to find broken scripts.

Teahouse
Hey, TF, please gain some more experience before answering questions from other new editors at the Teahouse. The advice you gave here is not correct -- for one thing, Wikipedia does not generally prefer WP:primary sources for most content; there are major considerations for using such sources, and we always prefer secondary. Questions at Teahouse generally are answered by editors who have significant experience editing. Valereee (talk) 10:36, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Valereee. First, please use ThatFungi and no shorthand. I prefer it that way. I appreciate your comments, however, I am not wrong based on the policy that they may be used in limited circumstances and with secondary and third (tertiary) sources. Therefore, I do not feel that the advice I gave was incorrect at all. The editor was previously directed to the policies and guidelines and I did not want to give a very long answer. I will not answer questions there though as you have ordered me not to. Thank you. ThatFungi (talk) 10:45, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Short descriptions
Do not change Wikipedia short descriptions just to match Wikidata. Per WP:HOWTOSD, "While the Shortdesc helper tool allows text to be imported from Wikidata, this should be done with caution as Wikidata descriptions do not follow Wikipedia policies". --Paul_012 (talk) 07:20, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Paul 012 You point out about using the tool only. Read the rest of it please. The short description has other criteria if you read through it. Wikidata descriptions can be changed as well to match the article, however, they are to be short and concise. They should not be repeating the title of the article. Please read through it and stop reverting my valid edit as I have done hundreds of these and you are the one with the issue of me doing this. I don’t want to get into an edit war with you so yes I’ll be changing it to meet the requirements. When you use the helper it allows you the ability to import, export, import and edit or override what’s there. It even turns red if you enter too many characters to tell you it is too long. I even asked you not to revert unless we spoke but you decided on your own to just revert my edit. ThatFungi (talk) 07:31, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Paul 012 I will just leave this one be to please you to avoid any edit warring. But you should really read the notes and engage in conversation when someone invites you to such and talk about it and if you are going to post about a “information article” which is neither a policy nor guideline look at the full picture please. ThatFungi (talk) 07:36, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- Your edit was very evidently a mistake, changing a good short description to match the bad one on Wikidata for no reason. I didn't see any other possible outcome for this discussion, so went ahead and reverted as waiting till later wouldn't have made a difference. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:51, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
