About unofficial flags

Hiya, please don't include flags in territory's articles, especially in infoboxes, unless they are the actual flag. Putting a proposed flag front and center, even if it is labeled as proposed, can mislead readers. I see that you also are adding real flags to articles - if they are truly real, please make sure you back it up with a source. We don't want to misrepresent the subject. The best kind of source would be one that links directly to the governing authority for the territory - flags.fandom.com and other wikis generally shouldn't be used as sources because anyone can edit them, without any checks for accuracy.

If you do want to include unofficial flags, you should do so in its own respective page (assuming it has been covered by multiple reliable sources). Don't include them in the main article until they are adopted (sure, you can link to the supplementary article in a "government" or "culture" section or something).

I noticed that you generated this image with AI (completely jumbled insignia is the giveaway. it also scores a 97% fake rating on zerogpt). AI-generated images are a big no-no, such so that there is a policy that forbids them. Wikipedia strives to be as accurate as possible, and AI-generated images create and hallucinate things that don't exist. EatingCarBatteries (contribs | talk) 03:08, 2 April 2026 (UTC)

@EatingCarBatteries According to Wikimedia Commons rules 'Wikimedia Commons permits AI-generated media, provided they are educational, properly labeled, and in the public domain or freely licensed. As of April 2026.' It states 'AI-generated images must be useful for educational purposes, similar to traditional media. "Pretty" images that lack educational value may be deleted.' I therefore would argue that because the unaltered flag did not show the details of the flag, an AI 'touch-up' was warranted. I agree it does not entirely do the original flag justice, but it gives the viewer a somewhat understanding of the town's official flag. https://cdn.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/docs/Flags-Protocol-F140.pdf (See page 3). So the thing is, is that Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia are two separate services (as you know, they are very closely intertwined). Wikimedia Commons has its own separate set of guidelines than Wikipedia - Commons is the media file repository, whereas Wikipedia is an encyclopedia.
So what I'm getting at is that while AI-generated images can be on Commons, their use in Wikipedia articles is still subject to guidelines.
So for example, from the AI-generated image use policy:

Images whose details have been substantially regenerated by generative AI (e.g., in order to create a colorized or higher-resolution image) should not be used, subject to the same exceptions as apply to images fully generated by AI. Generally, the original version of the image should be used instead.

Of course there are exceptions to this rule (and rules aren't always set in stone), such as articles about AI, and notable AI-generated images. The concern with AI touchups is that they can hallucinate features of the image that don't exist. EatingCarBatteries (contribs | talk) 01:46, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
Ahhh, I see, thank you for the clarification, and sorry about the AI produced/enhanced images. I agree that AI definitely can make up complete rubbish. Also, what would you suggest I do about adding unofficial flags to territories info-boxes? Should I only do so if there is enough reputable sources I can cite? Thanks :) XX Breezy Xx (talk) 02:07, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response, hope you had a good weekend. It's all good, Wikipedia can be confusing.
I don't know if there is any hard rule about it, but I personally don't think unofficial flags should be in infoboxes for the reasons I stated earlier (a lot of people look at infoboxes at a glance, take in the information, and maybe not see that it is unofficial even if labeled as such).
But for inclusion in articles, as a whhole, yeah it generally boils down to having a reputable source. Hope this helps :) EatingCarBatteries (contribs | talk) 03:53, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you heaps, I appreciate it! XX Breezy Xx (talk) 03:30, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
