Vanha Vaasa hospital (Finnish: Vanhan Vaasan sairaala) is a state-owned forensic psychiatric hospital located in Vaasa, Finland. It is one of the two state-owned psychiatric hospitals in Finland, alongside Niuvanniemi Hospital in Kuopio. The hospital provides specialized forensic psychiatric services nationwide.[1]

The hospital carries out mental state examinations and treats individuals who have been assessed as not criminally responsible for their actions. In addition, it provides care for patients suffering from severe psychiatric conditions. Approximately half of the hospital’s patients receive forensic psychiatric treatment, while the other half require hospitalization due to the severity of their conditions.[2] Most of the hospital wards are closed and separated by gender, but there is also a mixed ward and an open ward.[3] Treatment at the hospital is typically long-term, often lasting several years.[4]
