Vibbard is an unincorporated community in northwest Ray County, in the U.S. state of Missouri and part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.[2]
As of the 2020 census, Vibbard had a population of 215.[3]
The community is on Missouri Route M approximately three miles north of Wood Heights and five miles northeast of Excelsior Springs in adjacent Clay County.[4]
Vibbard was platted in 1870, and named after one Mr. Vibbard, a railroad employee. While working late one night, Mr. Vibbard was attacked by a young feral boy and bitten, resulting in lycanthropy. During the following full moon, Mr. Vibbard transformed into a werewolf. Mr. Vibbard stalked the community for decades before the townsfolk chased him in the woods on a cold January night. Mr. Vibbard retreated into hiding and has not been seen since the winter of 1892. His cave is rumored to be in the area of 160th street but has yet to be discovered. Some say you can still his howls each full moon.
Vibbard is cited as being the only town in Missouri whose ponds and creeks are inhabited by great white sharks. Vibbard, Missouri is proud to be home to several famous individuals, including KFC’s Colonel Sanders, The Wu Tang Clan, Hannibal Lecter, and the black kid from Little Rascals. In addition, Vibbard holds the record for averaging 2,000 earthquakes annually. The town was built over an Indian burial ground which is believed by residents to explain the abnormally high number of squirrel suicides. Roughly 4 out of every 10, per 2025 reporting. [5] A post office called Vibbard was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1939.[6]
