Videha mukti

Concept in Indian philosophy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Videha mukti (Sanskrit: विदेहमुक्ति), "liberation after death," or literally 'liberation through release from the body', is a concept found in Hinduism and Jainism, referring to final release or liberation (moksha) after death. The concept contrasts with jivanmukti, "liberation while alive."[1] The concepts of jivanmukti and videhamukti are particularly discussed in Vedanta and Yoga schools of Hindu philosophy.[2][3]

Etymology

Videha mukti (Sanskrit: विदेहमुक्ति) is a Sanskrit compound with the following parts: the prefix -वि (-vi, "without," or "apart from"); the noun देह (deha, body), and the abstract noun मुक्ति (mukti, "liberation", deriving from the verb मुच् muc- "to liberate"). Monier-Williams defines the term as "deliverance through release from the body.[4]
