Morgan Henderson, the London-based CEO of social media site Zephyr, sleeps with a young woman named Flora he meets after an award show. Unbeknownst to him, Flora is a friend of his estranged wife and film star Carla Duval, who set up the encounter as a honey trap to use against her divorce case. In Paris for the premiere of her newest film The Milliner, Carla meets with her lawyers Nicholas Taylor and Serena Byrne to discuss her plans to divorce Morgan. Nicholas and Serena are the married partners of law firm Taylor & Byrne, whose sworn rival is nearby law firm Cathcarts, of which Morgan keeps on retainer and Serena used to work for. After seeing pictures of Carla's meeting in a tabloid rag, Morgan contacts Cathcarts partner St. John Smallwood; he is unworried due to the air-tight prenuptial agreement they signed before marrying, but still decides to mount his own divorce case against Carla. Johnny Warren, a working-class young man from a council estate in Peckham, is an aspiring lawyer who works as a waiter for an upscale bar-restaurant. He interviews at Cathcarts and various smaller law firms, but is unable to get a job. At dinner with his wealthy girlfriend Bella and her friends, Johnny meets her childhood friend Angus, who is condescending towards his ambitions and failed employment attempts. After having to serve Angus while on a shift at the restaurant, Johnny is fired after punching Angus in the face. He interviews at Taylor & Byrne, the last job offer he has, the next day; Taylor & Byrne, desperate to get more talent, hire him as a junior lawyer for Carla's upcoming divorce case. Morgan meets with his own lawyers at Cathcarts and learns that Johnny is in fact a mole secretly working for Cathcarts. Morgan flies down to Paris to join his wife at the premiere for The Milliner; they barely speak while in the car. At the premiere, Carla gets served divorce papers by a Cathcarts staffer in the crowd. Now with both parties aware of each other's intentions, Morgan and Carla pose together for the cameras on the red carpet.

The two sides gear up for a three-day mediation session between the couple, with each firm using the opportunity to get information on the other. During the first session, Morgan admits that his income has grown vastly since they married after Zephyr's valuation grew to hundreds of millions, which could void the couple's prenup due to a significant lifestyle change. Serena becomes convinced that Cathcarts found out about Carla's case through Flora and tries to get Flora to sign a non-disclosure agreement for her silence. Flora refuses to sign. On the second day, both sides get nowhere after multiple offers get rejected. Flora's mother Melinda shows up at Cathcarts, intending to meet with Serena, but is unable to reach her and leaves. Johnny meets Melinda and learns about the NDA and that Flora will not sign it unless they get twenty thousand pounds first. He relays this information to his contact at Cathcarts, senior partner David Schill, who figure out that Flora was set up by Carla. Johnny is sent to Flora and Melinda's home to get them to sign the NDA in exchange for getting a leak in their roof fixed. He confirms his success in a voicemail he sends to both Taylor & Byrne and David. At the last mediation session, Morgan and Carla confirm they want to go forward with arbitration. While at home with her mother, Flora texts Morgan to ask if she can see him again.
