Settlers were present as early as 1834 in what was the unincorporated village of Coburg.[6] A post office was established at Coburg in 1876, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906.[7] The community was named after Cobourg, Ontario, the native home of an early settler.[8][9] Coburg was a station and shipping point on the railroad.[10] Washington Township was organized in 1836.[11]
