Proof that 2 and 2 make 5

• Let a and b be equal non-zero quantities

  ${\displaystyle a=b}$

• Multiply through by a

  ${\displaystyle a^{2}=ab}$

• Subtract ${\displaystyle b^{2}}$

  ${\displaystyle a^{2}-b^{2}=ab-b^{2}}$

• Factor both sides

  ${\displaystyle (a-b)(a+b)=b(a-b)}$

• Divide out ${\displaystyle (a-b)}$ [this is the point where the theorem is wrong]

  ${\displaystyle a+b=b}$

• Observing that ${\displaystyle a=b}$

  ${\displaystyle b+b=b}$

• Combine like terms on the left

  ${\displaystyle 2b=b}$

• Divide by the non-zero b

  ${\displaystyle 2=1}$

• Add 3 to each side

  ${\displaystyle 5=4}$

  ${\displaystyle 4=5}$

  ${\displaystyle 2+2=5}$

You know it's true (as long as you don't have any qualms against division by zero, and I hear Jimbo doesn't).
