I propose merging to Hypocnemis. This article covers 6 species in the genus Hypocnemis which were thought to be a single species until 2007. Two more species were split out later but are not present in this article. The Hypocnemis page covers all 8 species, while this one covers 6 of them, distinguished only by having been identified in the same study in 2007. Small amounts of discussion on the talk pages have not identified any reason to have two articles: the genus and the species complex appear to be the same thing. The two later-described species are described in sources as part of the complex even though missing from this article.
I propose to merge into Hypocnemis because that article is more complete (8 species vs 6) and has fewer sourcing problems. Warbling antbird has issues both with misrepresented sources and with talking about "warbling antbirds" without any source saying that these traits are common to the whole species complex, and often sourced to papers about just one species. It reads as if it were once a single species page and was awkwardly converted to talking about the species complex.
The main difficulty is that there's quite a bit of text in this article (even after several editors removed unsourced or mis-sourced material recently). Most of it is redundant with Hypocnemis but not all, so the merge will be a lot of work. I decided not to do a BOLD merge because of the workload--I wanted to be sure there was consensus first. - Merge as per OP. The articles are of equal age, originating as Polbot stubs for respectively the species and the genus; then one was developed as species complex article and the other as genus article. We don't need both. The latter (Hypocnemis) is indeed in better shape in most respects, and merging should go in that direction. Note that each of the species in the complex/genus have perfectly serviceable articles of their own.--Elmidae (talk · contribs) 14:15, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
- Comment by OP: While I had the impression from the articles that the genus and the species complex are the same, this turns out not to be the case (working on fixing this in Hypocnemis now). One species, the yellow-browed antbird, is in the genus but not in the species complex. I still don't think we need a page for the species complex though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by M kuhner (talk • contribs) 06:03, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
It's been about a week. Should I take this as a yes, merge? Seeing no comments against it here or on either talk page. M kuhner (talk) 20:55, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
- I think technically you're supposed to wait for an uninvolved editor to close it first. RainbowtheDragonCat (talk) 22:05, 6 May 2026 (UTC)

- Merge Echoing all the other arguments above I think it makes sense to consolidate all these different species into one article about the genus. Agnieszka653 (talk) 16:57, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- Somewhat hesitant keep, and don't merge. The default state of affairs would be to have a single page per species, which I would prefer. But if we don't have pages for each of the warbling antbird species because there's minimal unique material, surely it then makes sense to cover it in a dedicated article? The genus page cannot reasonably accommodate descriptive material for all species, and we do have a standalone page for the other member of the genus. Vanamonde93 (talk) 22:23, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- I think there may be confusion here. The current state is that we have (1) a genus page (Hypocnemis), (2) a species-complex page covering 6 of the 8 species in the genus (Warbling antbird), and (3) individual species pages for all 8 species. The proposal is to get rid of (2) because it seems to add little value to (1). The individual species pages will not be affected by this proposal. M kuhner (talk) 23:43, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
