Wikipedia:Good topics/Meléndez–Quiñónez dynasty

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Meléndez–Quiñónez dynasty was a period in this history of El Salvador where the Meléndez and Quiñónez families exerted authoritarian control of the Salvadoran government. From 1913 to 1927, brothers Carlos and Jorge Meléndez and their brother-in-law, Alfonso Quiñónez Molina, traded the presidency amongst themselves. They consolidated their political allies and patronage network into the National Democratic Party and monopolized polling stations during elections to ensure the dynasty's survival. The dynasty ended when Pío Romero Bosque, who Quiñónez hand-picked to serve as a puppet ruler, broke ties with the dynasty and implemented democratic reforms.
