James Cook

Captain James Cook was a British Royal Navy officer, explorer, and cartographer who led three voyages of exploration to the Pacific and Southern Oceans between 1768 and 1779. During these voyages he sailed tens of thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas, mapping coastlines, islands, and features across the globe. He completed the first known circumnavigation of the main islands of New Zealand, and led the first recorded visit by Europeans to the east coast of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands. Renowned for exceptional seamanship and courage in times of danger, he was also a pioneer in the prevention of scurvy. In his three Pacific voyages, Cook encountered numerous indigenous peoples, many with little or no previous contact with Europeans, leading to violent encounters in which indigenous peoples and Cook's crew members were killed. In Hawaii in 1779, Cook was killed when a dispute with Native Hawaiians turned violent. (Full article...)

  • Comment: Shouldn't this run in 2029 for a clean 250th year anniversary? It wouldn't be far enough away to re-run, and it seems strange to celebrate the 247th when you have such a big milestone right next to it. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 00:00, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
I'm pretty up in years, and wouldn't mind seeing it on the front page before ...  :-) But I'll defer to the consensus of the community. Noleander (talk) 00:04, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
I too don't think it has to wait that long. The article was recently promoted, so it makes sense to feature it at the next suitable opportunity rather than wait some years more. Gawaon (talk) 02:55, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
Agree with Gawaon. Why delay three years just to hit a round number? Cook's not around to see it. There will be no parades. Go with recent promotion --> TFA. MisawaSakura (talk) 15:35, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
