Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Ethiopia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion and merging of articles related to Ethiopia. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Ethiopia|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Ethiopia. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Africa.

Battle of Hagoogane (1920)

Battle of Hagoogane (1920) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

I'm nominating this article for deletion because I have been unable to find sufficient substantial coverage of Hagoogane to justify a standalone article. Of the eleven references currently listed, only two appear to discuss Hagoogane directly, and both do so briefly. One refers to the event as the "Hagoogane raid", while another appears to describe it as an avenging raid. An additional source provided on the talk page explicitly describes Hagoogane as a "looting raid". Taken together, the available sources do not appear to provide substantial coverage of Hagoogane as a distinct battle.

There are also several detailed claims in the article, including casualty figures, force strengths, belligerents and parts of the narrative, for which I have been unable to find support in the cited material. Other works have since been mentioned on the talk page, but it has not yet been demonstrated that these provide the substantial coverage needed to establish Hagoogane as a distinct and independently notable event. Some of these works are also not currently cited in the article, and relevant page numbers have not been provided.

I raised these concerns on the talk page before bringing the article to AfD, but the underlying issue remains. The question is not simply whether individual statements can be given additional citations, but whether reliable sources provide enough significant coverage of Hagoogane itself to satisfy WP:GNG as a standalone subject. Based on the sources currently available, I do not believe this has been demonstrated. The difficulties verifying the main points of the article also raise separate concerns under WP:V and potentially WP:OR. For these reasons, I believe deletion is appropriate. These concerns were also supported by @Replayerr on the talk page, who agreed with the issues raised above. (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Battle_of_Hagoogane_(1920)#c-Replayerr-20260725183700-Johannes_Klarnus-Pettersen-20260725012500). Delete. I agree, you should also maybe tag whoever made that article. Yubudirsi (talk) 15:29, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
The creator of the article has indeed been notified on their talk page. Johannes Klarnus-Pettersen (talk) 23:46, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
Support. I support this change.  Preceding unsigned comment added by Ocelius (talkcontribs) 00:39, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
Comment - would there maybe be Ethiopian/Somali sources to meet WP:NEVENT instead of GNG? Else we can just add verifiable info to Fifth Expedition (Somaliland) or Somaliland Campaign and delete per nom (very cogent btw :) - Asdfjrjjj (talk) 09:27, 12 August 2026 (UTC)

Maqora

Maqora (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

I don't think that this place, whatever it is - a khat farm according to the second source, a military camp according to the third source - is covered by WP:GEOLAND: the previously-unsourced sentence that formed the article said "Maqaora is a town located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) away from the city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia" and none of the sources support that. I am a bit dubious about the different spellings equating to the same place, but as I don't know anything about Amharic and how it is romanised, I can't suggest an alternative. For what it's worth, OpenStreetmap has it as Meqora'e Amharic: መቆራእ. No sources with significant coverage to support WP:GNG but I have not been able to search sources in Amharic. • Thanks for bringing this to AfD. I only removed the WP:PROD as it was focused on the existence of the place, but agreed that the sourcing (only consisting of passing mentions) wasn't sufficient for GNG (courtesy link).
The main language in that region is Oromo, with Harari having been spoken historically. The ejective /k'/ is often romanized q in Oromo, which would explain the varying spellings. Really, my main hope here is that the shorthand in Local history of Ethiopia might refer to sources discussing it more in detail, but the work is only available piecemeal and I haven't been able to find a key yet. Chaotic Enby (in solidarity · talk · contribs) 06:02, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
Nevermind, the codes can be found here. JDJ35 refers to its position in the British War Office maps, Gz to the Gazetteer of Ethiopia, and q only notes the existence of a spelling variant. Chaotic Enby (in solidarity · talk · contribs) 06:05, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
The Gazetteer itself has an entry for Mek'ora here, as well as "Mek'ora Bota" (literally "Mek'ora Locality"), respectively labeled as PPL (populated place) and LCTY (locality), cf. the key. So, Mek'ora did exist as some kind of populated place, at least historically. Annoyingly, this doesn't tell us anything about whether there was once a recognition for such a place (or for places below the kebele level in general), and we'd need someone more familiar with Ethiopian history to tell. Chaotic Enby (in solidarity · talk · contribs) 06:21, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I think the key is here. It seems that JDJ35 refers to a 10km x 10km square on a British War Office map in which the place is located, and [Gz q] means that the other information is taken from the US Defense Mapping Agency's Gazetteer of Ethiopia, with spellings enriched with the k/q equivalence that you note above. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 06:23, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
Just to note that my doubt about the spelling was also (and probably more) about Ma- vs. Me- than k vs. q. I don't think any of the current sourcing makes that equivalence. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 06:36, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Information Info - Note on soft closure: While this discussion appears to have no quorum, it is NOT eligible for soft deletion because it has been previously PROD'd (via summary).
