Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Martial arts

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion and merging of articles related to Martial arts. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Martial arts|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Martial arts. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Please be sure to follow the three basic steps when nominating an article for deletion. While not required, it is courteous to also notify interested people—such as those who created the article, or those who have contributed significant work to it. Thank you.

I propose merging to Flying kick because there is such as a significant overlap I am not convinced a separate article is necessary. The sourcing of this page is weak and mostly about the Karate Kid movie. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 14:09, 15 August 2026 (UTC)

  • Merge per nom, very limited notability (aspect of a single movie, it seems), very limited usage and applicability, and remarkably weak sourcing. Might make one sentence in the target article. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:12, 15 August 2026 (UTC)

Doesn't appear to meet the notability guidelines for events, possibly TOOSOON. I couldn't find much in a BEFORE search either. Axolitl (talk | contribs) 05:19, 15 August 2026 (UTC)

I propose redirecting to Egypt at the 1988 Summer Olympics because this weightlifter lacks independent notability, and other sportspeople eliminated early or finishing last at this Games, have been redirected to their country's pages. Haz215 (talk) 10:18, 14 August 2026 (UTC)

Wholly AI generated, see also this comment for explanation. msk 22:27, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

  • Keep Accepted at WP:AFC in good faith, with no evidence of AI generation, GPTZero says it's entirely human. Subject is notable. Theroadislong (talk) 22:05, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete, I am not seeing the required SIGCOV in multiple IRS sources. BJJ Heroes is a blog, and Cageside Press doesn't appear to have any editorial standards ("staff" is just a very long list of enthusiasts who have contributed articles at a flat pay rate, not paid editors and professional journalists). MMA Junkie has just a very routine, primary result recap. JoelleJay (talk) 14:48, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep (article creator). The article has been substantially rewritten and re-sourced since nomination (edits since nomination); please assess the current version.
Sourcing. Every competitive grappling claim now cites primary federation records — the IBJJF's official bracket pages (2017 No-Gi Worlds gold, 2017 World Master double gold, 2013 Worlds gold) and ADCC's qualifier list. BJJ Heroes supports only uncontroversial biographical detail, the role for which it has been the sport's standard reference for over fifteen years; nothing cited to it is contested by any source (WP:CONTEXTMATTERS).
SIGCOV. Bishop-focused features and interviews from independent outlets across six years, two sports and two languages:
  1. Sherdog (listed at WP:RSP as usable for MMA; on WikiProject MMA's more-likely-reliable list) — six dedicated pieces, incl. full-length staff features Jul 2024, Jun 2025, Aug 2025 and Jun 2026 (syndicated by Yahoo Sports).
  2. MMAPLANET (Japan, Apr 2025) — dedicated original interview (WP:NONENG); further Japanese coverage at BOUTREVIEW.
  3. MMAWeekly (Feb 2023) — interview feature.
  4. Grappling Insider (Sep 2020) — dedicated biographical profile predating her MMA career.
  5. ESPN (Wagenheim, Aug 2025) — original career analysis; FloGrappling feature; Fox 2 St. Louis broadcast segment.
Context. An IBJJF world champion (eleven world-championship medals in the federation's official results) who reached the 2025 PFL world tournament final and is ranked fourth at women's flyweight (PFL rankings) in what is, following the 2026 MVP merger, one of the two major MMA promotions. Her wins include five fighters with standalone articles: Kana Watanabe, Ekaterina Shakalova, Luana Santos, Elina Kallionidou and Ariane Lipski da Silva.
The article is now current through August 2026, and incoming links have been added from related articles, so the {{Orphan}} tag no longer applies. I will leave the remaining maintenance tags for uninvolved editors to assess against the current text. Shibaking (talk) 07:24, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
Blogs such as BJJ Heroes are absolutely prohibited on BLPs. Your LLM forgot to mention that key policy.
Sherdog can only be used--with caution--for basic info on fighters, e.g. database-type stats, it is certainly not at the high quality we require for BLPs.
MMA Planet is a pure Q&A interview, zero independent secondary coverage.
Bout Review has a few sentences of secondary coverage but is almost entirely blow-by-blow primary match coverage.
MMA Weekly is another interview with little secondary independent coverage.
Grappling Insider is clearly not RS.
ESPN is casual listicle-style hype promoting upcoming bouts broadcast by ESPN, not independent or SIGCOV.
FloGrappling is a routine bout recap and doesn't seem to have published editorial standards.
Fox is routine event hype with barely 2 sentences of actual coverage. JoelleJay (talk) 17:10, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
I find it hilarious that the LLM knows that the deletion rationale is for LLM use, and yet because it can't deny not being an AI it just pretends the deletion rationale is for something entirely different. msk 21:50, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

  • Weak keep based on what's available and a real effort to make good. Bearian (talk) 01:13, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
@Bearian: NEWLLM is a policy, and the article isn't any less AI generated since the nomination. msk 04:09, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
    • (1) Yes, I got that, but (2) I thought that an effort to fix the issues by re-writing it by a human would cure the problem. Am I wrong? Bearian (talk) 08:07, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
The subject should also meet GNG and NSPORT, which is not evident from the sources. JoelleJay (talk) 20:27, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
You are right, however until someone actually rewrites the article, it should be nuked. msk 15:19, 18 August 2026 (UTC)

Mostly an unreferenced list, and I found no evidence of meeting WP:NEO. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 17:26, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

In the 2006 AfD, there were no arguments based on hard evidence of notability. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 17:28, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

  • Keep - This page happened because Street Fighter fans kept making pages falsely claiming Street Fighter invented the term. They will just do it again if deleted. Evan1975 (talk) 21:26, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete - Without any actual reliable sources, the article is pure WP:OR. It is obviously difficult to search for reliable sources regarding the topic as an English speaker, as if any exist they would likely be in Japanese, but even if they exist, the article would still need to be deleted and rewritten from scratch as this is nothing but a list of examples that, again, appear to rely entirely on original research. Rorshacma (talk) 23:00, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge to Street Fighter II or Ryu, where it currently appears most prominently. The term appears in and is defined in secondary sources, but I believe not discussed in a way to warrant a stand-alone article, therefore merging would be what the WP:ATD policy suggests. If there's a better, Street Fighter-independent target I've not seen it but would welcome the input. In addition possibly transwiki to Wiktionary. Several articles use the term without properly defining it, so that it would make understanding worse if this article was simply deleted. @Evan1975: The secondary sources I've seen define it as a fictional martial arts style without referring to Street Fighter, but they don't make it clear where the term comes from and that it's not originating with that game. If you would know any proper source making this clear, that would be really helpful. Daranios (talk) 10:15, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

But then the policy-based solution according to WP:ATD-TRANS would be to transwiki the sourced definition to Wiktionary rather than outright deletion. The term is certainly used on Wikipedia, so removing the possibility to get an explanation within the greater project seems not helpful. Daranios (talk) 19:23, 15 August 2026 (UTC)
I would support transwiki in that case, given the definition itself is sourced. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 01:04, 16 August 2026 (UTC)
