Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Nigeria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion and merging of articles related to Nigeria. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Nigeria|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Nigeria. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Africa.

Article previously PROD'ed, as not notable due to lack of sources and SIGCOV. An editor has added two sources, however I remain less than convinced that WP:GNG can be met for this event. I am unable to find WP:SIGCOV beyond a number of newspaper articles, with coverage petering out very rapidly after the incident. That's quite aside from the fact I see no purpose in retaining an article consisting of six sentences and an infobox. Danners430 tweaks made 13:35, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

Comment My belief is that the two newspaper articles are what meets SIGCOV. Wikipedia:Notability#significant_coverage states: "Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material." If each article has SIGCOV, and there are at least two articles, then notability should be met.
In any event, typically a crash of a commercial airliner with passenger deaths is going to be treated as notable. This is not policy, but a de facto practice I've observed over the years.
Additionally, note that both sources are from the United States. This crash happened in Nigeria, and at minimum there should be ample coverage from Nigerian media of the 1990s, even if it is not easily accessible from the internet.
I also notified three WikiProjects to get additional feedback.
WhisperToMe (talk) 14:38, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
An update: This article states "The spate of plane crashes in the last six months in the country have been attributed" to a political change in Nigeria, and the PM News article is from February 9, 1996. While it does not name this crash by name, the topic crash occurred on November 13, 1995. I'm checking Nigerian newspapers to see which ones mention this crash by name. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:03, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
I am officially stating Keep on the basis of this newspaper article from the UK, in that it stated that the effect is that there was a feeling of lack of safety at the time. WhisperToMe (talk) 16:20, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

I propose merging to Christ Embassy(Added) because Christ Embassy AKA Loveworld Incorporated is the corporate parent of this non notable former label. Deletion review here refers. The page was WP:SOFTMERGEd following a previous discussion, but the merge decision was to the wrong target (Chris Oyakhilome). There is almost nothing mergeable, but we could use the first two sentences at the target. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 10:01, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

This article was submitted as a draft by a temporary account and accepted by a reviewer who is under investigation for possible undisclosed paid editing. Review of the sources shows that the first source is a report of an interview, and so not independent, and the next five appear to have been written by the subject's publicist, and so are not independent. The seventh source is a list of 20 TikTok influencers, which does appear to be independent coverage. However, it doesn't name the subject.

Fails GNG - only sources are primary sources which serve only to verify existence. Danners430 tweaks made 09:47, 27 June 2026 (UTC)

  • I consider myself to be a Deletionist, but in this case I’ve contested a PROD and now I’m !voting Keep. The airport serves a State capital of Nigeria, a city with a population of half a million in a state of more than six million; I think its notability is basically intrinsic. The person suggesting deletion has removed information about airlines operating to the airport because it was unsourced, but it stands to reason that a State capital has scheduled flights to and from its airport; it seems to me that it’d be more useful to try to find sources than to delete the information and then immediately PROD the article, not to mention take it to AfD immediately after the PROD tag is removed. The subject may not be notable to a person outside Nigeria, but this is the English Wikipedia, the official language of the country is English and it is the third-most populous Anglophone country, nine times as many people as the population of my country (Australia). YSSYguy (talk) 10:52, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
General Notability however is based on its coverage by independent sources - and as of right now, there is not a single source covering this article beyond primary sources serving only to verify the existence of the location.
As for your contested PROD… it would be rather nice for you to explain WHY you are contesting it. Danners430 tweaks made 11:43, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
I contested the PROD for the reasons stated above. YSSYguy (talk) 19:01, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
Yes, it would’ve been good if you’d explained that in your edit summary instead of just “remove PROD tag” Danners430 tweaks made 19:31, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Perhaps we should get back to discussing the article instead of using your comments here, my Talk page and your edit summaries to admonish me over my shortcomings as a human being, including my inability to fit a version of my comment above into an edit summary. Notwithstanding WP:OTHERSTUFF, the way my brain works basically boils down to “if X applies to J, and J is the same as Q apart from some minor criterion (such as location), then X must also apply to Q”. Which is to say, if the article about this airport should be deleted due to the subject failing to meet the GNG, then the articles about much of the world’s infrastructure ought to go as well, including the articles about ninety percent of the airports in Australia. Either an airport serving a major city is intrinsically notable or it isn’t. If it isn’t, I am certain that the airport receives significant coverage within Nigeria. It was trivially easy to find YouTube videos, Facebook posts, TikToks and the like containing information about the airport such as upgrades. I don’t live in Nigeria (and I daresay the Nom doesn’t either) and I’m not on Facebook or any other social media either, so it’s functionally impossible for me to evaluate the importance of social media content as a means of disseminating official information in Nigeria and it’s also functionally impossible for me to access much in the way of mainstream media in Nigeria. (I have noticed that even here in Australia, the use of Facebook by businesses and organisations in lieu of a proper website is rife, which I find to be very annoying, but I digress). As I noted above, English is the official language of Nigeria and this is the English-language Wikipedia, therefore it is a resource for Nigerians as much as it is for Singaporeans or New Zealanders or Guamanians or Canadians or Americans - countries where things that mean nothing at all to an Australian such as myself have significant local notability. YSSYguy (talk) 01:00, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
Social media content doesn’t establish notability - significant coverage by secondary, reliable sources does. And I am unable to find such significant coverage, and the article contains precisely zero secondary sources. That in itself makes the article fail GNG. Danners430 tweaks made 05:47, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Note: this discussion has been included in the AfD sorting lists for the following topics: Aviation and Nigeria. Danners430 tweaks made 09:47, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete, no opposition to a redirect to List of airports in Nigeria#Airports should a consensus arise to do so – WP:GNG requires "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." In addition, I'm unable to find any reliable secondary sources that provide significant coverage of this airport. The two recently added sources include a source only containing a short mention of the airport and the second one is the final report of an aviation accident that happened at the airport. The other sources that already existed prior to the nomination are, as the nominator stated, "primary sources which serve only to verify existence." I was only able to find passing mentions on Google Books ( ). Same on Google Scholar (, etc...). Searches on Google only revealed passing mentions ( ) or unreliable sources. Social media is not a reliable source and should not be used to determine notability (unless in very rare cases if the accounts are reliable). Aviationwikiflight (talk) 11:41, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment again, I point out that there is evidence that social media is used in Nigeria to disseminate official information (including Facebook and Instagram accounts that show up in search results, but which I am unable to actually view and assess due to not having a presence on social media), including about the subject of the article. In addition, significant coverage is available elsewhere: (2026) - “The airport is a gateway not just to Sokoto, but to the entire North-Western region. These infrastructure upgrades are crucial for enhancing passenger experience and facilitating regional development” (2026) - “strategic importance of Sokoto as a major hub for Hajj operations in Nigeria” (2018) (2018) (2018) (2026) (2024) - “no fewer than six different airlines have now commenced flights and patronage to the Sokoto routes in a bid to meet up with the high passenger demands. Among other reasons that have been attributed to the surge in air traffic on the Sokoto route is the significant and strategic importance of the state as the seat of the caliphate.” (2016) (2014) (2025) (2026) (2009) (2013) (2016) (2018) (2019) and more besides, easily found by a Google search for “Sokoto airport”.
Combined, the sources demonstrate that the airport is an important element of Nigeria’s infrastructure, especially Sokoto State’s infrastructure; that the terminal building was badly-damaged in a storm in 1984, that there have been several upgrade programs in addition to the rebuilding of the terminal, that there have been varying numbers of airlines serving the airport, that it was used by the Nigerian Air Force as a temporary base during operations against local banditry, that it is an important departure point for Hajj flights to Jeddah, that there was a tarmac invasion in August 2018 when a politician arrived there, which sparked nationwide discussion about the security of Nigeria’s airports and how they are perceived internationally (information removed from the article by the nominator for deletion). The subject is not a private airstrip used only by an oil company to access its production facility in a remote corner of the country, it is an airport for a state capital; the article is not based on a satellite image on Google Maps, as is the case with another ‘airfield’ in Nigeria that the nominator PRODded. It puzzles me that it was ever PRODded in the first place, considering how easy it was to find online references as I sit in rural Australia dealing with a crappy internet connection. My now-condensed comments above speak to that puzzlement. Notwithstanding WP:OTHERSTUFF, I seriously doubt that there would ever be a deletion discussion about an airport serving a state or provincial capital elsewhere, such as Helena, Montana in the US; or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in Canada. YSSYguy (talk) 05:52, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment – An analysis of the sources presented above reveals that none of the sources meet WP:GNG's requirement ("significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.") Some of the sources contain enough coverage of the airport but are not reliable. The rest do not contain significant coverage of the airport and are mostly short mentions:

Comment: one of multiple independent sources discussing ongoing works to upgrade the airport, including a new lounge for VIP passengers. Includes the quote: "The airport is a gateway not just to Sokoto, but to the entire North-Western region. Press release of involved parties, not independent. Yes [Not even about the same airport (upcoming Sokoto State Hajj Airport).]

Incorrect: the Sokoto State Hajj airport is the airport we are discussing.

This press release - we are allowed to use media releases - and the video (26) from 2026, as well as the article 28 below (from 2016) go to demonstrate the importance of the airport to the region in annual Hajj flight operations. Other articles from various years (including 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018) regarding Hajj flight operations at Sokoto are also available online.

Yes Yes Yes [Only talks about an incident at the airport, no significant coverage.]

Disagree: this source as well as 24, 25 and 35 below, are all discussing a breach of security at the airport, in which hundreds of people went onto the apron in front of the terminal, preventing an arriving aircraft from parking on said apron. The coverage is in multiple news outlets on different days, therefore it constitutes significant coverage of an event in the history of the airport.

Yes [Master's theses are not reliable unless they have had a demonstrable impact, which this one does not.] Comment: provides some information about the history of the airport; the thesis is based on the then-new terminal being so badly damaged by a storm in 1984 that it was demolished and rebuilt, a significant event in the history of the airport. I would write the event into the history section: “two years after the airport was opened, in May 1984 the terminal building was so badly damaged by a storm that it had to be rebuilt” or something similar. The thesis has far more detail than that, among other things it states that the terminal was designed by a Dutch company, that the design failed to take into account the local wind conditions, the unusual failure mode - the roof came off the building in one piece and remained intact - and that a helicopter was destroyed by wind at the airport in 1983. It is likely that the research used for the thesis was also used to redesign the terminal and that the thesis’ author assisted in the redesign and used his work to apply for his Master’s degree (as discussed in the last ten pages of the thesis). I am not in a position to judge whether this thesis had an impact in designing other local buildings built since 1984 to withstand local wind conditions. From my reading of the thesis, the possibility exists that it did have a demonstrable impact in this respect, but I can’t prove that four decades later from where I am; it cannot be dismissed as not having such an impact. ? Disagree, the article states that the equivalent of an extra million US dollars on top of what has already been spent, is being spent on further works at the airport, in a country where US$200 a month is a decent wage. Also one of multiple independent sources discussing ongoing works to upgrade the airport; the article in isolation does not have a lot to say, but when taken with other articles it is clearly part of widespread coverage of the subject - widespread coverage that the Nigerian government is spending a lot of money on the airport.

  • This whole debate - including my previous comments - has so far ignored any but online sources. The building of a new airport for a state capital would have been a big deal in any country in the world in the late 1970s-early ‘80s; it is safe to assume that there would have been contemporary coverage in Nigerian media of the need to replace the old airport, the decision to construct the airport, the construction of the airport and the opening of the airport, and of the damage to the terminal building in 1984 - and of other events concerning the airport prior to the advent of the internet, such as the crash of a BAC 1-11 airliner in 1992. The online sources - only some of which are presented here - demonstrate ongoing coverage of the airport over a period of decades, such coverage showing more than the mere existence of the airport. The sourcing is clear promotional - the EP announcement runs near-identically in The Nation and New Telegraph (press-release distribution). Sometimes organisations are difficult to determine their notability, however you see a clearly non notable one when there are no secondary or at least reliable sources to back up the contents herein. Bearing this in mind, such resonates with this article as if fails WP:ORGCRIT which, for me, should there be WP:ATD at all, should never be considered. Nevertheless that doesn't mean it cannot be notable someday but it's obviously not for this time. SafariScribeEdits! Talk! 15:04, 15 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Weak keep. I adjusted some of the promotional language and added some citations, and I think the organization is borderline notable - there's at least some secondary independent coverage. I searched Wikipedia Library's default EBSCO database, Google Books, and JSTOR, but haven't exhaustively searched scholarly databases, so there could be more secondary coverage available. Note that another article was recently merged here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/African Pride Accelerated. If the organization doesn't seem sufficiently notable, a good alternative to deletion would be to merge this material to the article about the founder of the organization, Akudo Oguaghamba. Dreamyshade (talk) 16:30, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
@Dreamyshade, can we see the citations you added in order to review if it is notable for Wikipedia. Again, why presume that since you didn't find exclusively scholarly articles, then there must have to be secondary ones, and therefore, per your statement, it is a reason to weak keep the article? Who cares for this AFD?
Analysing the above shows there is indeed no standalone chance for this article if not to merge it into the founders. But I wonder why you will first lay a biased arguement before leaning to an WP:ATD? SafariScribeEdits! Talk! 02:32, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
Everyone can look at the article history to see the citations I added.
Since you've made ten comments on this AfD, in addition to your nomination statement, I encourage reviewing Wikipedia:Don't bludgeon the process and Wikipedia:Drop the stick and back slowly away from the horse carcass. Dreamyshade (talk) 02:48, 27 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Lean keep or possibly merge with Akudo Oguaghamba per Dreamyshade's statement. The article has decent sourcing although it could be improved, and this nomination has already inspired some improvements. The fairly recent Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/African Pride Accelerated decision to merge content into this article should be considered and given some weight here, as well. That discussion had low participation and was not explicitly evaluating the notability of this article, but editors there clearly did not find fault with this article and saw it as an appropriate place to cover content that should be covered somewhere on en-wiki. —Myceteae🌈 (talk) 21:48, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
Because the editors of that deletion discussion might have been in the quandary of saving an article, and so, they found this. Moreso when the so-called ATD now becomes non notable (of course as this one), we have an option of deletion. When you argue merg again to the parent article i.e. the foundere, I see a good point there but what actually made Akudo Oguaghamba notable is this organisation, and her article should have covered muc of this one.. SafariScribeEdits! Talk! 23:01, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
This orgnization made its founder notable, but the organization itself is not notable? Interesting. —Myceteae🌈 (talk) 15:46, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
@Myceteae, yes, an organisation can actually be the influence of its founder and still may meet not WP:STANDALONE. It may have been you're lean on AFD. Maybe. Because so many articles have actually been merged to its founder. SafariScribeEdits! Talk! 02:08, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
I assume you mean WP:PAGEDECIDE, since we are not discussing any standalone lists here. (Hey look, I do know a thing or two about AFD!) You didn't make a PAGEDECIDE argument, you just said this organization is not notable but its founder is notable and was made so because of her work with this organization. I was trying to follow your logic but if you were actually intending make a PAGEDECIDE argument, that would make sense, and is consistent with my !vote. —Myceteae🌈 (talk) 23:59, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
@Myceteae, you said for this AFD, ...That discussion had low participation and was not explicitly evaluating the notability of this article, but editors there clearly did not find fault with this article and saw it as an appropriate place to cover content that should be covered somewhere on en-wiki. Really? Let me tell you: they didn't find fault with this article because 1. They are not interested here 2. They probably didn't care to check here but presupposes that there must be an ATD to whatsoever non AfD-ed article, in this sense, this one 3. Or that they are blind (but this is out of bound b/c I consider all editor intelligible). SafariScribeEdits! Talk! 02:35, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
Yes, that is exactly what I meant to convey. I said the prior AFD should be considered and given some weight, not that it should determine the outcome here. I then acknowledged a couple reasons why it may not be persuasive or applicable here. I'm so glad you ultimately understood what I was saying, despite seeming to think I did not understand the implications of my own statements. —Myceteae🌈 (talk) 00:04, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Lean keep. Would support merge as suggested by Dreamyshade and seconded by Myceteae. Also, per WP:BEFORE, nominating a very new article for deletion instead of allowing time for growth seems premature; a clean-up tag and/or article talk page discussion first would have been better. Pikkupapupata 💌 🌷 01:28, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
@Pikkupapupata since clean-up tag and/or article talk page discussion are not possible because a BEFORE shows nothing notable about this organisation, what claims then are you holding to argue against the nominator, or importantly, for the keep of this article? Sources? That is what is an AFD discussion and not causality case. SafariScribeEdits! Talk! 15:42, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
WP:BEFORE is clear about what to consider and steps to take before nominating an article for deletion. I don't see evidence that such steps and considerations were taken before this nomination, and I fail to understand how those steps were 'impossible'.
And my initial reply to this discussion was clear enough. Pikkupapupata 💌 🌷 15:50, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
That is nevertheless a reason to argue for keep. Unless you know not the value of AFD, show sources therefore to prove that no BEFORE (of sources), irrespective of time, was done. SafariScribeEdits! Talk! 18:16, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
A clean-up tag is always possible. While WP:DILIGENCE can find sources to show that notability is achieved, any failure to find such is not proof that such sources do not exist, as not all reliable sources are online, nor are all online sources indexed appropriately by the key online tools. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 18:43, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete: Does not meet WP:NORG. No independent sources seem to cover it significantly in-depth. It can be merged with Akudo Oguaghamba. I'm not sure whether the merge target is notable. But for now, the organization is at least not notable for a standalone article. — Raihanur (talk) 16:36, 21 June 2026 (UTC)

I am not impressed with the sources in this article and I could find nothing more in my own online searches for this "streamer" and content creator. The primary contributors to this article are sockpuppets of User:Fractor4 and Temporary accounts. I just don't think he has reached Wikipedia's standards for notability. Liz Read! Talk! 00:57, 15 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Comment: it certainly would appear that this is the same subject as the first nomination (which ended in deletion), especially since the logs for Draft:X-Dynasty (both attempts started in draftspace before being moved) show both attempts were created by the same sock, though that does not necessarily tip this into G4 territory. • Keep (but confused): Due to the article’s sources seeming non-promotional, I recommend it to be kept but I’m still turned between merging the article to what made the ‘’streamer’’ notable, the NUMB philosoply, rather than a stand alone article for him yet, but yet again the sources talk about him more in relation to the philosophy, but at this point, I’m just confused, I don’t know if I really made myself clear enough?.  Preceding unsigned comment added by HelenJoan the cat (talkcontribs) 13:33, 17 June 2026 (UTC)
Hello, HelenJoan the cat. You only created your account a few hours ago. How did you find your way to this deletion discussion? You have also already tried to nominate another article for an AFD. Did you have other accounts you used before this one because most editors who have only been active for a few hours don't know about the AFD process. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 18:12, 17 June 2026 (UTC)
Hello @Liz, true to it, I never had any idea about AFDs forum or section on Wikipedia. I was browsing through some science related articles earlier and I happened to stumble across some articles one of which let me to the AFDs, though I edit Wikipedia mildly mostly with temporary accounts and concerning the article I nominated for deletion, it was a blatant promotional attempt which I think the author is even related to the article. All coverage (both cited and found via WP:BEFORE) is run of the mill and fails to meet WP:CORPDEPTH, or is WP:NEWSORGNIGERIA. Having Zuckerberg visit is nice but is not a notability guideline. 🄻🄰 13:50, 11 June 2026 (UTC)

  • The criteria for sources used for establishing notability include CORPDEPTH and ORGIND which I describe below in my !vote. An analysis of sources shows the following:
  • CNN (2013) source relies entirely on information/interview provided by the company/execs/developers, there is no original research/opinion/etc and no in-depth information which does not originate from the company - fails ORGIND and CORPDEPTH
  • Newsweek (2016) article is a general overview of the tech scene in West Africa and devotes 10 sentences related to this topic company, starts by describing what it is like to work in the building, then a couple of broad information points such as partnering with Microsoft and a visit by Zeckerberg, then the location of the building. None of that qualifies as in-depth information about the company, fails CORPDEPTH.
  • Disrupt Africa (2019) could perhaps be classified as investigative reporting with named interviews - but that's the problem. The article merely regurgitates what is said in the interview without providing ORGIND "independent content", fails ORGIND.
  • TechCrunch (2019) source repeats part of an announcement, and even taking into account [[WP:TECHCRUNCH], I believe there is sufficient in-depth independent content here.
  • Kolade et al. publication provides a summary of the topic company and their activities, but the bibliography reveals that all of the information was retrieved from Co-Creation Hub website. Reading the text, I don't see any independent content by way of independent fact checking/analysis or opinion, therefore fails ORGIND.
Since there is only one source which - in my opinion - meets the criteria, I think Draftifying will give an opportunity to locate another source, thereby meeting the minimum criteria for establishing notability. HighKing++ 16:07, 27 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Keep Draftifyadditional source located This is a company therefore GNG/WP:NCORP requires at least two deep or significant sources with each source containing "Independent Content" showing in-depth information *on the company*. "Independent content", in order to count towards establishing notability, must include original and independent opinion, analysis, investigation, and fact checking that are clearly attributable to a source unaffiliated to the subject. One source arguably meets the criteria, draftifying provides an opportunity to locate more. HighKing++ 16:07, 27 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Then the simple thing to do is delete. It's had an extra ten years to gather enough notability, and it hasn't. Someone might recreate it at a later date should notable subject matter be found.  Preceding unsigned comment added by SenshiSun (talkcontribs)
  • Note I've located an additional source which in my view meets the criteria - the topic therefore has two sources which contain in-depth independent content and meets the minimum standard required. HighKing++ 12:29, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
