What is Kosovo?Kosovo (Albanian: Kosova or Kosovë, Serbian Cyrillic: Косово; officially the Republic of Kosovo (Albanian: Republika e Kosovës. Serbian: Република Косово, romanized: Republika Kosovo) is a new independent country, but yet still disputed territory in Southeastern Europe. Defined in an area of 10,887 square kilometres (4,203 sq mi), Kosovo is landlocked and is bordered by Serbia to the north and east, North Macedonia to the south, Albania to the west, and Montenegro to the northwest. Geographically, Kosovo possesses varied and opposing landscapes for its size determined by the ideal climate along with the geology and hydrology. Most of central Kosovo is dominated by the vast plains and fields of Metohija and Kosovo. The Prokletije and Šar Mountains rise in the southwest and southeast respectively. Map of Kosovo After international negotiations between the provisional institutions of government in UN-administered Kosovo and Serbia failed to reach a consensus on a final status for Kosovo, the Assembly of Kosovo, based on the plan formulated by UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari recommending independence supervised by the international community, declared independence from Serbia as the Republic of Kosovo on 17 February 2008.
