Yohannes Abraham is an American diplomat, government official, and executive who served as United States Representative to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations from 2022 to 2024. Prior to being Ambassador to ASEAN, Abraham served as chief of staff and executive secretary of the National Security Council.[1] He was previously a longtime aide to President Barack Obama, including serving as senior advisor and chief operating officer of the Obama Foundation,[2] before serving as executive director of Joseph R. Biden's presidential transition[3] and being selected to lead the planned presidential transition for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.[4]
Abraham was born in Virginia to immigrant Ethiopian parents[5] and raised in Springfield, Virginia.[6] He graduated from Westminster School in Annandale, Virginia,[7] and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia.[8] He received a BA in political science from Yale College in 2007 and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he graduated with high distinction as a Baker Scholar in 2019.[6] While in business school, Abraham was also selected as a residential fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics.[9]
