Indian video on demand service From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ZEE5 or Z5 is an Indian subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming television service owned by Zee Entertainment Enterprises.[2] It was launched in India on 14 February 2018 with content in 12 languages.[3] The ZEE5 mobile app is available on Android, iOS, and BlackBerry.[4] In December 2018, ZEE5 had 56.3 million monthly active users,[5] increasing to 65.9 million by the end of 2020.[6]

Merger

On 15 February 2018, Zee consolidated dittoTV along with its advertising-supported streaming platform, OZEE (launched in February 2016),[7] into ZEE5. The merger unified Zee's digital operations into a single service featuring over 100,000 hours of movies, original series, television broadcasts, and music across 12 regional languages.[8]

dittoTV

Launched in 2012 by Zee Entertainment Enterprises' digital arm, Zee Digital Convergence Limited, dittoTV was a subscription-based video-on-demand and over-the-top streaming platform.[3] It distributed live television and catch-up programming across mobile devices, computers, and connected televisions, offering more than 100 live channels. The service operated in India and international markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and New Zealand, and featured an electronic programme guide, content recommendations, and multi-currency support.[9]

Programming

The service started streaming web series in 2018 with Nanna Koochi (Telugu),[10][11] America Mappillai (Tamil)[12][13] and Dhatt Tere Ki (Hindi),[11] followed in the same year by Kallachirippu, produced by popular filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj,[14][15] Karenjit Kaur – The Untold Story of Sunny Leone, and Life Sahi Hai.[11]

In July 2019, ZEE5 and ALTBalaji announced that ZEE5 subscribers would get seamless access to ALTBalaji's originals in addition to existing ZEE5 content.[16] ZEE5 made an exclusive deal with The Blunt for five web series, starting with Faltu Engineers.[17]

In January 2023, ZEE5 became the official streaming partner for International League T20 cricket, marking the service's entry into major sports streaming.[18] In 2024, ZEE5 added football to its sports catalogue by streaming Calcutta Football League matches.[19]

In June 2026, ZEE5 secured the rights to stream all major FIFA tournaments in India from 2026 to 2034. This includes the 2026, 2030, and 2034 FIFA World Cups.

HiPi

HiPi is a video sharing social platform for Indian audiences, available free on the ZEE5 app, where users can record and upload their own videos and can also view and engage with the videos shared by other people.[20][21]

Availability

The service was launched in the United States on 22 June 2021; ZEE5's Archana Anand and actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas attended.[22][23]

Mobile app

The service offers a mobile app on three platforms, and it has partnered with Applicaster,[24][25] Lotame, Talamoos and A.I. video enhancement startup Minute.ly to provide enhanced UI/UX and improved application performance.[26]
