Ümit Yılbar (1966, Kadıköy, Istanbul – 25 September 1993, Bağgöze, Siirt) was a Turkish musician and guitarist. Yılbar, one of the guitarists of Mezarkabul (known as Pentagram in Turkey), one of Turkey's famous heavy metal bands, voluntarily became a commando while performing his military service as a sub-lieutenant, and died at the age of 27 during a conflict with the PKK in an operation he participated in on 25 September 1993. His body is in Edirnekapı Martyrdom.[1]
In memory of Yılbar, who was also the guitar teacher of Gökhan Özoğuz from the Athena,[2][3] Athena band dedicated the album One Last Breath and Pentagram band dedicated the song Fly Forever from their second album Trail Blazer to him.[1] A street was named after him in Kadıköy, where he was born and raised, to keep his memory alive.[4]
A poem that Ümit Yılbar wrote 11 days before his martyrdom is still remembered. Here are the words of the poem written by Yılbar:[5]
I didn't know that the mountains were this steep,
I didn't know that the nights were this long,
I didn't know that time passed so slowly,
But I knew the love of the homeland inside me,
I knew the love inside me.
Do you want my blood, my land,
or my corpse?
As long as you're thirsty,
I'll be your water,
I'm like a crazy dog on a leash
They don't let me go,
Don't they know? I am a Turkish child,
Let me go to die,
I created this head on the road.
Even if a stone falls on my head,
My friend, I won't give up on this road, .
Let seven heifers come, I will crush them all.
