La banda se formó como MyTown en 1996, cambiando su nombre a The Script en 2001. Lanzaron su álbum homónimo en 2008 llamado The Script. El álbum fue número uno en Irlanda y Reino Unido. También llegó al top 10 en Australia y Suecia; y llegó al número 19 en US Top Heatseekers.
El sencillo debut de The Script, "We Cry", llegó al top 10 en las listas irlandés y daneses. Fue seguido por su sencillo más exitoso de su primer álbum, "The Man Who Can't Be Moved", que alcanzó el número dos en las listas irlandesas, danesas y de Reino Unido. "Breakeven" fue lanzado; llegando al número tres en Australia y número diez en Irlanda. Su sencillo más exitoso hasta la fecha, y el último, "For the First Time", llegó al número uno en Irlanda (su primer éxito número uno), número cinco en Reino Unido, y llegó al Top 20 en Australia y Países Bajos.
