Lucas Cornelis van Scheppingen (Manila, Filipinas; 22 de octubre de 1976), conocido artísticamente como Laidback Luke, es un disc jockey y productor discográfico filipino-neerlandés de música electrónica. Es el fundador del sello Mixmash Records, creado en 2004 para la edición de su propia música y la promoción de nuevos productores.[1] Ha figurado de manera recurrente en la lista Top 100 DJs de la revista DJmag entre 2008 y 2016, alcanzando su mejor posición en el puesto 17 en 2010.[2]

Es conocido internacionalmente por la versión de «Show Me Love» producida junto con Steve Angello y con la voz de Robin S., que alcanzó el puesto 11 de la lista oficial de sencillos del Reino Unido y el número 1 en la UK Dance Chart en 2009.[3] Entre sus lanzamientos se cuentan los álbumes de estudio Psyched Up (1998), Electronic Satisfaction (2002) y Focus (2015), así como el álbum mixto Windmill Skill (2003) y numerosos sencillos y remezclas.[4][5]
Biografía y carrera
Laidback Luke nació en Manila, hijo de padre neerlandés y madre filipina, y creció en Hoofddorp, en los Países Bajos. Antes de dedicarse profesionalmente a la música tuvo actividad como artista del grafiti, y a comienzos de la década de 1990 empezó a pinchar y producir música electrónica.[4] Desde entonces ha trabajado con artistas como David Guetta, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, Example y Junior Sánchez, y ha actuado en giras por Europa y Norteamérica, además de presentaciones en Japón e Ibiza.[6]
En 2004 fundó el sello Mixmash Records, orientado principalmente a la música house y sus subgéneros, que se utiliza tanto para editar sus producciones como para publicar trabajos de otros artistas.[1][7] En 2013 abrió una subdivisión del sello, Ones to Watch Records, destinada a la promoción de nuevos talentos dentro de la escena del clubbing.
Además de Psyched Up (1998) y Electronic Satisfaction (2002), Luke ha publicado el álbum de estudio Focus (2015),[5] el recopilatorio Psyched-Up (The Early Works '96-'98) (1999) y el álbum mixto Windmill Skill (2003).[8][9] En 2003 realizó un remix de la canción «Crescendolls» de Daft Punk para el álbum Daft Club del dúo francés, y en 2008 editó el álbum mixto Ibiza Closing Party como CD de obsequio con la revista británica Mixmag.[10][11]
En el ámbito de los festivales, ha actuado en eventos de música electrónica como Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival o Electric Daisy Carnival, y organiza la fiesta temática Super You&Me, en la que comparte cartel con DJs consolidados y artistas emergentes.[12]
En 2012 fue nominado al premio a «mejor DJ europeo» en la 27.ª edición de los International Dance Music Awards.[13] En 2016 apareció en el documental I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, centrado en la figura de Steve Aoki y nominado a los Premios Grammy.[14]
Vida personal
A fines de 2012 contrajo matrimonio con la DJ y productora neoyorquina Gina Turner, con quien también formó el proyecto musical Nouveau Yorican.[15][16] La pareja tuvo una hija, EvaLina Lucy, nacida en marzo de 2014.[17][18] En 2017 ambos anunciaron su separación.[19]
En febrero de 2020 se casó con Ashley Reina van Scheppingen.[20] Tiene tres hijos, de relaciones anteriores y de su matrimonio con Reina.[18]
Además de su actividad como DJ y productor, practica kung-fu, en particular el estilo Choy Li Fut, y ha representado a Países Bajos en campeonatos mundiales. En el Campeonato Mundial de Kung-fu disputado en China en 2013 obtuvo cuatro medallas de oro y una de plata, y en 2017 consiguió tres oros, dos platas y un bronce en el campeonato celebrado en Hong Kong.[21][22] En 2018 fue portada de la edición neerlandesa de Men's Health, donde se destacó su combinación de carrera musical y entrenamiento en artes marciales.[23]
