Systématique

Le nom valide complet (avec auteur) de ce taxon est Cathorops Jordan & Gilbert, 1883^[2]. Ce genre a été initialement créé comme étant un sous-genre d’Arius^[3].

Étymologie

Le nom générique, Cathorops, est la combinaison en grec ancien de καθοράω (kathoraō), « qui regarde vers le bas », et de ὦψ (ṓps), « œil », et fait référence à la position basse des yeux de Cathorops hypophthalmus^[4]
