Darko Suvin

Il est né à Zagreb dans le royaume de Yougoslavie dans une famille juive croate, d'un père médecin. En 1939, sa famille change le nom Šlesinger en Suvin à cause de la propagande nazie antisémite. En 1941, il est baptisé dans la foi catholique pour échapper au risque de persécutions^[1]. Il manque d'être tué par une bombe allemande, ce qui lui donne l'impulsion de réfléchir aux mondes parallèles^[2]. Plusieurs membres de sa familles sont tués dans la Shoah.

Après des études et une thèse à l'université de Zagreb, il gagne sa vie en traduisant des romans de science-fiction en croate. Dans les années 1960 en Yougoslavie, il publie ses premiers ouvrages d'étude de la science-fiction^[2].

En 1967, il part pour l'Amérique du Nord enseigner en université. Son expertise de la science-fiction, un objet d'étude encore neuf à l'époque dans le monde anglo-saxon, lui vaut d'être recherché par les facultés^[2] et il est engagé par l'Université McGill de Montréal en 1968.

Il se dédie à la recherche théorique sur la science-fiction. Il est à l'origine de concepts d'analyse du genre. Le novum, terme emprunté au latin, désigne la mise en scène d'une hypothèse, qui génère les créations nouvelles présentes dans les récits de science-fiction. Cette idée apparaît pour la première fois dans son article « On the Poetics of the Science Fiction Genre » en 1972. Il développe également le concept d'« étrangement cognitif », un sentiment d'étrangeté qui naît du surgissement de nouvelles hypothèses scientifiques ou politiques qui remettent en cause la vision du monde habituelle.

En 1999, il part s'installer en Italie.
