Laird Barron

Laird Samuel Barron (né le 5 mars 1970) est un écrivain américain, dont une grande partie de l'œuvre relève des genres de l'horreur, du hardboiled noir et du noir horrifique. Auteur principalement de nouvelles, il a reçu le prix Shirley Jackson en 2010 et le prix Bram Stoker en 2013. Il a publié cinq romans, traduits en plusieurs langues. Il vit dans le nord de l'État de New York.

Biographie

Barron a passé ses premières années en Alaska[1]. Il a décrit sa jeunesse comme particulièrement difficile parce que sa famille était pauvre et vivait dans des régions isolées.

Carrière

En Alaska, Barron a participé trois fois à l'Iditarod, la course de chiens de traîneaux, au début des années 1990[1] et a travaillé comme pêcheur en mer de Béring[2].

Il s'installe dans l’État de Washington en 1994. Il s'investit alors dans le milieu de la poésie, publiant dans plusieurs revues en ligne et devenant finalement rédacteur en chef de la Melic Review[3]. Ses débuts professionnels datent de 2001, lorsque l'éditeur Gordon Van Gelder publie « Shiva, Open Your Eye » dans le numéro de septembre de The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Son premier recueil de nouvelles, « The Imago Sequence & Other Stories », est publié en 2007 par Night Shade Books et assure sa notoriéte dans le panorama de la littérature d'horreur et weird fiction[3].

Il a déclaré son affection pour les romans populaires, les westerns et le film noir et son œuvre associe généralement un ou plusieurs de ces éléments avec une intrusion surnaturelle horrifique. Barron a qualifié la Bible et le Necronomicon de « plus grandes histoires d'horreur jamais racontées »[4].

Outre The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, les œuvres de Barron ont été publiées dans SCI FICTION, Inferno : New Tales of Terror and the Supernatural, Lovecraft Unbound, Black Wings : New Tales of Lovecraftian Horror et The Del Rey Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Elles ont également été rééditées dans de nombreuses anthologies des meilleures nouvelles de l'année et ont été nommées pour plusieurs prix.

Il a remporté le prix Shirley Jackson en 2007 et 2010 pour ses recueils de nouvelles The Imago Sequence and Other Stories et Occultation and Other Stories. « Mysterium Tremendum » a reçu le prix Shirley Jackson en 2010 de la meilleure nouvelle. En 2013 il gagne le prix Bram Stoker pour le meilleur recueil de fiction, The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All and Other Stories (Night Shade Books)[5]. Il a également été nommé en 2009 pour sa nouvelle « Catch Hell »[6]. Parmi ses autres nominations figurent le prix Crawford, le prix Sturgeon, le prix de l'International Horror Guild, le prix World Fantasy et le prix Locus.

Son deuxième roman, The Croning, a été publié en 2012 par Night Shade Books et a reçu des critiques partagées[7],[8]. Ses trois romans suivants ont été publiés par GP Putnam's Sons.
