Fils de Lucile Gleason et James Gleason, deux acteurs, il suit les traces de ses parents et de ses grands parents paternels[1], tout d'abord au théâtre[2], puis dans des rôles secondaires au cinéma.
Alors qu'il était dans une phase de succès dans sa carrière en tant qu'acteur, il s'engage dans l'armée américaine fin 1943, et en attente d'un transfert en Europe il fait une chute mortelle par la fenêtre d'un hôtel à New York. Il n'a pas été possible de déterminer si c'était une chute accidentelle ou un suicide[3],[4].
