大日本帝国による真珠湾攻撃から4日後、アメリカ合衆国の対日宣戦布告から3日後の1941年12月11日、イタリアの対米宣戦布告を受けて、アメリカ合衆国議会は『イタリア政府とアメリカ合衆国政府および人民との間に戦争状態が存在することを宣言し戦争遂行に関する規定を設けるための両院合同決議』を可決し、イタリア王国に宣戦布告した。また、同日、ナチス・ドイツに対しても宣戦布告を行った。
