アル・ジャロウ

アイオワ大学で心理学を学び、数年間はカウンセラーの仕事をしていた。後にロサンゼルスへ渡り、ジャズ・クラブで歌い始める。1975年に35歳でワーナー／リプリーズからデビュー。1978年に『ライヴ・イン・ヨーロッパ』が、1979年に『風のメルヘン』がグラミー賞の最優秀ジャズ・ボーカル・アルバム賞を受賞した。

1980年からはジェイ・グレイドンやナイル・ロジャース、ナラダ・マイケル・ウォルデンらのプロデュースの下、AOR／ブラック・コンテンポラリー路線でポップ分野でのヒットも生み、1982年には『ブレイキン・アウェイ』でグラミー賞の最優秀男性ポップ・ボーカル賞と「(Round, Round, Round) Blue Rondo A La Turk」で最優秀ジャズ・ボーカル賞を、1993年には『ヘヴン・アンド・アース』で最優秀R&Bボーカルを受賞した。この功績によりジャズ、ポップ、R&Bの3部門にまたがってグラミー賞を獲得した、最初の個人となる。

1985年にはUSAフォー・アフリカに参加し、「ウィ・アー・ザ・ワールド」のブリッジ部分（ウィリー・ネルソンの次、ブルース・スプリングスティーンの初回の前）でリード・ボーカルをとった。

1999年にワーナー／リプリーズからヴァーヴ傘下のGRPに移籍。ジャズ寄りの作品も発表している。

2006年にはギタリスト兼ボーカリストのジョージ・ベンソンとの共作アルバム『ギヴィン・イット・アップ』を発表しており、自己のヒットナンバー「Mornin'」をカバーしている。

2010年7月に公演先のフランスで呼吸障害で倒れ、病院に搬送。「重篤な状態」とも報道されたが、順調に回復^[2]。9月には日本で元気な姿で公演も行われた。

2017年2月12日、ロサンゼルスの病院で76歳で死去^[3]。
