ウィルフリド・セラーズ

1912年、ミシガン州アナーバーで生まれた。父は著名なカナダ系アメリカ人の哲学者・ロイ・ウッド・セラーズである。ミシガン大学、バッファロー大学、そしてオックスフォード大学で教育を受けた。オックスフォードではロードス・スカラーに選ばれ、1940年に彼の最終学位となる修士号を受けた。

第二次大戦中は軍の情報部で働いた。その後、アイオワ大学、ミネソタ大学、イエール大学で教え、1963年から死ぬまでの間、ピッツバーグ大学で教えた。この大学は、彼のリーダーシップによって、世界でも最も優れた哲学部を擁する大学となった。

日本での知名度は決して高くないが、認識論、存在論、科学哲学、心の哲学、言語哲学、哲学史研究の各分野において業績を上げた。クワインと並ぶ戦後アメリカを代表する哲学者である。多くの優秀な弟子を育てたこともあり、現在第一線で活躍する研究者に言及されることも多く、現代哲学の主要な“源泉”の一つであるとも言われる。
