シロアリから分離させた水素生成菌やパンダの糞から分離した廃棄物処理菌など、地球環境へ配慮した微生物の有効利用研究[1]の第一人者として知られ、2009年10月1日、同研究でイグノーベル賞・生物学賞を受賞した。
