Wahlkreis Swansea West (House of Commons)

Swansea West (walisisch Gorllewin Abertawe []) ist ein Wahlkreis (englisch constituency) in der Grafschaft West Glamorgan im Süden von Wales, der einen Abgeordneten ins britische Unterhaus (House of Commons) entsendet. Er besteht seit 1918, liegt in der Principal Area Swansea und umfasst die westlichen Stadtteile Swanseas.

Geschichte
Der Wahlkreis entstand bei der Umsetzung des Representation of the People Act 1918 aus Teilen des aufgelösten Wahlkreises Swansea und des weiterhin bestehenden Wahlkreises Gower. 1950, 1955, 1983 und 2024 nahm die Boundary Commission for Wales im Rahmen periodischer Überprüfungen verschiedene Anpassungen des Grenzverlaufs vor.
Der Wahlkreis umfasst(e) folgende Gebiete:
- 1918–1950: im County Borough Swansea die Wards Alexandra, Bryn Melyn, Castle, Ffynone, St Helen’s und Victoria[2]
- 1950–1983: im County Borough Swansea die Wards Brynmelyn, Cockett, Ffynone, Oystermouth & Brynau, St Helen’s, Sketty, Victoria und Waunarlwyd[2][3]
- 1983–2024: in der City and County of Swansea die Wards Castle, Cockett, Dunvant, Killay North, Killay South, Mayals, Sketty, Townhill und Uplands[4][5][6]
- seit 2024: in der City and County of Swansea die Wards Castle, Cwmbwrla, Landore, Morriston, Mynydd-bach, Penderry, Sketty, Townhill und Uplands[7]
Vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg dominierten die Liberal Party und die von ihr abgespaltene National Liberal Party den Wahlkreis. Seit 1945 hält die Labour Party den Sitz fast ununterbrochen, mit Ausnahme der Jahre 1959 bis 1964 als die Conservative Party mit Hugh Rees den Abgeordneten stellte. 1964 eroberte Alan Williams den Sitz für Labour zurück und hielt ihn dann 46 Jahre lang. Auf ihn folgte 2010 Geraint Davies von der mit Labour verbundenen Co-operative Party. 2023 wurde er nach Vorwürfen sexueller Nötigung aus der Partei suspendiert und konnte nicht an der Unterhauswahl 2024 teilnehmen. Bei dieser setzte Torsten Bell die Labour-Erfolgsserie fort.
