1896 Iowa Hawkeyes football team

American college football season From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1896 Iowa Hawkeyes football team was an American football team that represented the State University of Iowa ("S.U.I."), now commonly known as the University of Iowa, as a member of the Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA) during the 1896 college football season. In their first and only year under head coach Alfred E. Bull, the Hawkeyes compiled a 7–1–1 record (3–0–1 in conference games), won the WIUFA championship, shut out seven of nine opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 132 to 12.[1] It was the first Iowa football team to win a conference championship. The Hawkeyes defeated Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska; their sole loss was to Chicago.
