1895 Iowa Hawkeyes football team

The 1895 Iowa Hawkeyes football team represented the State University of Iowa ("S.U.I."), now commonly known as the University of Iowa, as a member of the Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA) during the 1895 college football season. The team compiled a 2â5 record (0â3 in conference games), finished in last place in the WIUFA, and was outscored by a total of 138 to 42.[1] It was the last Hawkeye football team to go without a head coach when the university decided to forgo hiring a professional football coach.[2] The plan backfired, and although the team posted victories over Parsons and Penn College, they failed to score in each of their five losses. The next year, Iowa hired Alfred E. Bull as their coach.

The team was the first racially-integrated Iowa football team, as Frank Kinney Holbrook became the team's first African-American player.[3] Holbrook was later inducted into the Iowa Letterwinners Club Hall of Fame.[4]
Guard Kalita Leighton was the team captain.[5] The team played its home games at Iowa Field at Iowa City, Iowa.
