  • A Royal Air Force English Electric Canberra on an intelligence-gathering flight overflies the secret Kapustin Yar rocket test site in the Soviet Union.
  • Using money-saving quick-turnaround aircraft ground handling techniques — including having its own pilots refuel its planes instead of paying airport personnel to do it, keeping one engine running while a purser quickly escorts passengers to and from the plane, and using an airstair (a door that doubles as a staircase for passengers) to avoid waiting for a ground crew to roll a wheeled staircase up to the plane — that cut ground time for its airliners to the point that its planes can discharge passengers, board passengers, and begin to taxi for takeoff only 90 seconds (7+12 minutes if refueling is necessary) after coming to a stop,[67][68] Southwest Airways schedules a Douglas DC-3 to fly from San Francisco International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport in 3 hours and 45 minutes with eight stops.[citation needed]
  • August 1 Indian Airlines begins operations.[69]
  • August 20 Using aerial refueling, 17 U.S. Air Force F-84G Thunderjets make the longest-ever nonstop flight by jet fighters, flying 4,485 miles (7,218 km) from the United States to the United Kingdom.
