2026 French Open – Men's singles

Tennis championship From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carlos Alcaraz was the two-time reigning champion,[1][2] but withdrew before the tournament due to a wrist injury.[3] This marked Alcaraz's first absence from a major since the 2023 Australian Open.[4]

Jannik Sinner was vying to complete the career Grand Slam, but lost in the second round to Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.[5] The loss ended Sinner's career-best winning streak of 30 matches, as well as a streak of nine consecutive major titles won between him and Alcaraz, dating back to the 2024 Australian Open. This marked the first time the incumbent world No. 1 failed to reach the third round of the French Open since Andre Agassi in 2000, and the first time Sinner lost before the fourth round of a major since the 2023 French Open.[6]

Juan Manuel and Francisco Cerúndolo are the first pair of brothers to reach the third round of a major since Mischa and Alexander Zverev in 2018.[7] At 5 hours and 58 minutes, the third-round match between Juan Manuel Cerúndolo and Martín Landaluce was the longest match at the French Open since the first round encounter between Corentin Moutet and Lorenzo Giustino in 2020[8] and the longest match at any Grand Slam to be played with a final-set tiebreak. It was the third-longest match in the tournament's history.[9]

By making his 82nd major appearance, Novak Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer and Feliciano López's joint all-time record for the most total major main draw appearances.[10] Djokovic's defeat to João Fonseca in the third round marked only the second time (after the 2010 French Open) that he lost at a major after leading two sets to love, and the first time since 2009 that Djokovic failed to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open. Fonseca became the first teenager to beat Djokovic at a major.[11] Djokovic's defeat guaranteed a first-time men's singles major champion. This also marked the first time in the Open Era that no former major champions had reached the round of 16 stage of a major.[12]

Jesper de Jong became the third lucky loser in the Open Era to reach the fourth round of the French Open, and the first since David Goffin in 2012.[13] Also entering as a lucky loser, Coleman Wong became the first player from Hong Kong to participate in the main draw of Roland Garros in the Open Era.[14] Moïse Kouamé was the first male player born in 2009 to win a major match, and the youngest male player to reach the third round of a major since Rafael Nadal at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships.[15]

This tournament marked the final French Open appearances of 2015 champion, three-time major champion and former world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, and former world No. 6 Gaël Monfils. Both players lost in the first round, to de Jong and Hugo Gaston, respectively.[16][17]
