Incumbent Republican Liz Marty May is running for re-election, while Peri Pourier, who switched to the Republican Party in 2025, is running for state Senate as an independent. Democrat Elizabeth Lone Eagle's petition for the primary ballot was rejected, and no other candidates besides May filed for the primary. Lone Eagle later filed as an independent and was joined on the ballot for the general election by three other independents.[12] No independent has been elected to the South Dakota Legislature since 2010, but at least one is guaranteed to win in this election.[13]
