Acanceh (Spanish pronunciation: [akanˈke]) is a town and ancient Maya archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Yucatán, 21 kilometres (13 mi) from the state capital at Mérida. It is the seat of the municipality of Acanceh. The modern town of Acanceh is partially atop the pre-Columbian site, and occupation seems to have been continuous.[1] Acanceh means "groan of the deer" in the Yucatec Maya language.
The population of Acanceh, about 11,000 people, is mostly Maya, with the Mayan language predominantly spoken,[2] although basic Spanish is generally understood.
