Denodo provides data access, data governance, and data delivery capabilities across enterprise, cloud, big data, and unstructured data sources. The company's core offering is the Denodo Platform, a data management solution that transforms enterprise data into insights for AI, analytics, and self-service initiatives using a data virtualization architecture. [5][6]

History

In 1999, Angel Viña (current CEO and Founder of Denodo) was working as a full-time professor at the University of A Coruña, in Spain, researching the use of real-time data access and integration technologies to accelerate the ‘time to data usage’ in complex distributed data systems.[7][8]

He and a small cohort founded Denodo that year, with the company's roots in research projects developed at the Technical University of Madrid and the University of A Coruña in Spain. The focus was to bring speed from data collection to data delivery in a typical distributed IT environment.[9]

In 2002, Denodo launched the first version of the Denodo Platform, expanding its capabilities to leverage data virtualization as the core foundation. This advanced data integration, management, and delivery platforms using a logical approach to enable self-service BI, data science, hybrid/multi-cloud data integration, and enterprise data services.[10][11][12]

In 2006, the company moved its corporate headquarters from A Coruña, Spain, to Palo Alto, California, in the U.S., and in 2016, Denodo released Denodo Platform 6.0, introducing data virtualization in the cloud and query optimization.[13][14][15][16]

In 2015, Denodo debuted in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools and was recognized as the Winner of the 2015 Ventana Research Technology Innovation Award for Information Management. The following year, Denodo Platform 6.0 was released and was recognized as a Visionary in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Data Integration.[17][18]

In 2018, Denodo Platform 7.0 introduced new optimizations for query federation focused on big data execution. That same year, Denodo was recognized as a Challenger in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Data Integration and a Leader in Forrester's Big Data Fabric Wave, with the company recognized in 2019 Gartner Peer Insights report for 100% of Denodo customers willing to recommend it.[19][20][21][22]

In 2020, Denodo Platform 8.0 was released with a focus on hybrid/multi-cloud data integration as well as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The company is recognized as a Leader in both Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools from 2020 to 2024, and a Leader in Forrester's Enterprise Data Fabric Wave.[23][24][25][26]

Denodo introduced an AI engine in 2021, which automatically provides recommendations for performance acceleration and data exploration, as well as launching a new data catalog for self-service and data exploration. The following year, they were named Leader in the Enterprise Data Fabric Wave by Forrester and Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Data Integration tools.[27]

In 2023, Denodo added a Presto-based Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) engine to boost Denodo Platform performance. [28]

In 2024, Denodo introduced generative AI (GenAI) capabilities in the Denodo 9 platform, enabling users to query data in natural language through new integrations with ChatGPT and Microsoft Azure OpenAI. They were named Customers’ Choice in the Gartner Peer Insights ‘Voice of the Customer’: Data Integration Tools 2024 report, and a Leader in The Forrester Wave™Enterprise Data Fabric Q1 2024 by Forrester Research.[29][30][31][32][33]

In 2025, Denodo unveiled DeepQuery, forming part of the Denodo AI SDK, which enables users to do complex analysis with generative AI (GenAI). Denodo also unveiled support for model context protocol (MCP), embracing the open standard for how large language models (LLMs) interact with data sources.[5]

Funding

In 2004, Denodo received its first round of funding from Rosp Coruñaa - a $10B private equity firm owned by one of the founders of Inditex, parent company of Zara - and in 2017, HGGC - a middle-market private equity firm - invested in Denodo, making this the third announced investment from HGGC's $1.84 billion Fund III. [34][35]

In 2023, the company received $336 million in funding from TPG, a global alternative asset management firm, through TPG Growth, the PE firm's middle market and growth equity platform. J.P. Morgan was the sole placement agent for Denodo in the transaction.[36][37][38][8]
