Within the next few months, Universal Pictures was announced as distributor and Blunt was cast in the lead role. Filming took place from February to May 2025 in New York, New Jersey, and Atlanta.

Disclosure Day premiered at Le Grand Rex in Paris on June 2, 2026, and will be theatrically released in the United States on June 12, 2026.

In April 2024, it was announced that Steven Spielberg's next directing project would be a UFO film based on his own original idea, with David Koepp, who worked with Spielberg on multiple films, writing the screenplay.[13] Spielberg was inspired by the 2017 article "Glowing Auras and 'Black Money': The Pentagon's Mysterious U.F.O. Program", published in The New York Times, which he described as having rekindled his interest in the subject.[14] After receiving the initial treatment from Spielberg via email, Koepp would develop 42 drafts for the film's screenplay, the most drafts of his career.[15] In May, Universal Pictures was set to distribute.[16] The following month, Emily Blunt was reported to be in talks to join in the lead role.[17] She was confirmed to star in August.[18] From August to December, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, and Josh O'Connor were cast.[18][19][20][21] It was reported that O'Connor was offered his role without having to audition.[22] Henry Lloyd-Hughes also later joined the cast without an audition.[23] In March 2025, it was revealed that Paul Tazewell would serve as costume designer, in his second collaboration with Spielberg following West Side Story (2021).[24]

Filming

Principal photography began on February 26, 2025, in New Jersey, Atlanta, New York City, and Huntington under the title Non-View.[5] A casting call for Long Island–based background actors to play "wrestling fans" for a scene to be shot on March 4, 2025, was issued on January 16, 2025.[25][26][27] Subsequent casting calls in March 2025 sought background talent in the Hudson Valley area of New York state and the Middlesex County area of New Jersey; the Middlesex County casting call exclusively requested participants who could drive their own vehicles in the film, while the Hudson Valley casting call also requested actors to play diner patrons and hotel guests.[28][29] Additional casting calls sought actors to play North Korean soldiers.[30]

Filming was also conducted in March 2025 on the Cape May Seashore Lines railroad in southern New Jersey.[31] In early April, filming took place in the McGinley Square neighborhood of Jersey City.[30] In June, Koepp stated that production on the film had wrapped in late May.[32] During filming, Blunt vocalized a four-minute long take of her speaking an alien language without the use of AI post-processing techniques.[33]

Longtime Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kamiński served as cinematographer, filming the project predominately on 35 mm film using Panavision Panaflex Millennium XL2 cameras equipped with C and T series anamorphic format lenses for a 2.39:1 aspect ratio.[34] Certain handheld low light scenes were filmed using the digital Sony CineAlta Venice 2 camera.[34]

Visual effects

The visual effects were created by digital production companies Digital Domain, Wētā FX and Storm Studios, overseen by production visual effects supervisors Matthew E. Butler and Joel Behrens, and production visual effects producer Lauren Ritchie.[35]

Soundtrack

In October 2025, it was announced that John Williams had been hired to compose the score for the film, his thirtieth collaboration with Spielberg.[36] Back Lot Music will release the official soundtrack album. It will be released digitally on June 12, 2026, while Mondo will release the physical versions.[37]

Marketing

On December 10, 2025, billboards appeared in Los Angeles and New York City that teased the film with the caption "ALL WILL BE DISCLOSED. SPIELBERG. 06.12.26".[38] That same month, the title of the film was revealed with the release of the teaser trailer before screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash.[39] During Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, a TV spot for the film aired with new footage.[39] The official trailer was released the following month on March 12.[40] In April, extended footage was shown during the Universal Pictures presentation at CinemaCon.[41]

According to Spielberg, the entire third act of the film is being kept out of the marketing.[42]

Release

Originally set to be released on May 15, 2026,[16] Disclosure Day had its world premiere at Le Grand Rex in Paris on June 2, 2026, and is scheduled to be released in IMAX in the United States on June 12, 2026.[43][44][45] The film will have a limited release on 70 mm film prints blown up from the native 35 mm print, in addition to other premium large formats.[34]

Reception

Box office

By May 29, 2026, prior to the film's release in the United States, Boxoffice Pro projected an opening weekend of $40–50 million.[46] A report by Puck estimates that Disclosure Day will need to cross the $300 million mark to break even at the box office.[47]

Critical response

Initial reactions have been positive, with critics praising Blunt's performance and calling it "Spielberg's best film in 20 years".[48]
