AKM Rehan Ahsan (Bengali: একেএম রেহান আহসান; 9 September 1991 – 5 May 2013)[1] was a Bangladeshi student who was killed by law enforcement agencies on 5 May 2013 during the 2013 Shapla Square protests in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). [2][3][4]

Background
AKM Rehan Ahsan was born in Bogra. His family moved to Dhaka when he was 5 years old. [5]They are originally from Naogaon.[4]
He went to Government Labrotary High School, passing the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in 2007. He completed his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination in 2009 from Dhaka City College.[1] He then got admitted to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in the department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). At the time of his death, he was a 3rd year student at the department.[6]
2013 Shapla Square Protests and Death
On the evening of 5 May 2013, AKM Rehan Ahsan was present at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel during the Hefazat-e-Islam protests. According to his family, he attended the protests independently to raise his voice against comments made by bloggers attacking Islam. The family further stated that he was not involved with any form of religious or political movement or party. During the joint operation by law enforcement agencies to clear the square that night, Ahsan sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.[2]
Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
Ahsan's family received a phone call around 10:00 PM on 5 May 2013 informing them that he had been shot during the protests. After searching throughout the night, they located his body at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue at dawn.[7][8] Following his autopsy, police at the Shahbagh Police Station allegedly refused to release his body to his family until his mother, Iffat Ara Begum, signed a waiver agreeing not to take any legal action. Additionally, his family stated that members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League prevented them from holding his janaza on the BUET campus.[2][9]
According to the lawyer of Ahsan's family, they did not receive his autopsy report despite making several requests.[10]
For over a decade, no legal action was taken regarding his death. However, Following the July Uprising,in August 2024, Ahsan's family was finally able to file an official complaint with the International Crimes Tribunal seeking justice for his killing.[9][10]
Legacy
On 23 November 2024, the Computer Science and Engineering department (CSE) at BUET organized a memorial service and prayer for Ahsan. During the event, Dr. Mohammed Eunus Ali, the head of the CSE department, apologized for the university's 11-year silence regarding his death. The department also announced plans to establish a scholarship in Ahsan's name and to provide legal assistance to bring the perpetrators of his killing under punishment.[7][8]
