Early Life
Alexia Leclercq was born in France and grew up in Austin, Texas. She developed an early interest in environmental issues and social justice through Taiwanese and Buddhist cultural stories and personal experiences with pollution.[2]
Leclercq attended New York University, graduating summa cum laude with a self-designed major in The Politics and Economics of Inequality[3]. She later pursued graduate studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where her scholarly work was focused on incorporating liberatory pedagogy and traditional knowledge to develop a critical climate education framework[4]
Activism
Leclercq has spent over a decade organizing on environmental justice issues. Her campaigns have included efforts to secure clean water protections,[5][6] influencing land-use and housing policy in Austin,[7] halting petrochemical and industrial projects across Texas,[8] and strengthening climate governance mechanisms like the loss and damage funds and equitable fossil fuel phase-outs at national[9] and international[10] levels.
In 2019, Leclercq co-founded and became executive director of Start: Empowerment,[11] a nonprofit focused on environmental justice and political education. Its curriculum has reached over 120,000 students in schools and community spaces across the United States and in 2021, she launched the first climate organizing fellowship by and for Gen Z youth of color[12]. In 2026 the organization evolved into Land Justice Community School.[13]
Alexia Leclercq is also the co-founder of the Colorado River Conservancy,[14] a network called survival bloc, and local housing justice collective Community Powered ATX.[15]
