Biography
Mortimer was born in Leicester.[2] She trained in natural history illustration at Dyfed College of Art in South Wales, graduating in 1979.[2] After her studies, she worked as a freelance greeting card designer specialising in natural history subjects before establishing her career as a book illustrator and miniature painter.[2]
She has been a full member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers since 1987.[3] She was a full member of the Society of Botanical Artists from 1988 to 2007.[2]
Career
Mortimer’s work has appeared in specialist art publications and auction catalogues, including sales at Bonhams in London and New York.[2] Her artwork has been licensed for use on stationery and decorative porcelain, including limited-edition pieces produced by Coalport.[1] Her illustrations have also been used in wildlife-themed publications and products associated with organisations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the National Trust.[2]
She has exhibited at venues including the Society of Illustrators, New York, and the Bankside Gallery, London.[2]
Mortimer illustrated 17 children’s books for HarperCollins over a 25-year period before deciding to focus on stationery design.[2] She also produces larger-scale paintings, particularly of wildlife and botanical subjects.[2]
Her books have been published internationally and translated into multiple languages.[1]
Coverage
Mortimer has been profiled in regional and specialist publications. Articles in the Western Morning News and Devon Today highlighted her international recognition, books, and the use of her designs in stores including WH Smith, Marks & Spencer, and Disney shops.[1][4] The Western Morning News feature described her watercolour process, noting that each book page may take two weeks, as the illustration is built up with dainty sable brushstrokes.[4]
In 2020, Lucy Large profiled Mortimer in Exmoor Magazine, emphasising her awards, exhibitions, and her detailed wildlife and botanical paintings, including works such as Lepus Lazuli and stag paintings inspired by the Exmoor landscape.[2]
A double-page feature in Your Cat magazine covered the publication of Mortimer’s illustrated edition of The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear, detailing her 25-year career painting cats and the technical skill involved in her illustrations.[5]
Recognition and awards
Mortimer has received recognition from the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers, including an Honorable Mention in 1987 and the Gold Memorial Bowl, the society’s highest award, in 2023 for her painting Woodland Primroses.[6]

Her work was included in the society’s centenary publication in 1995.[2]
