Early life

Asa was born on April 17, 2006 in Tokyo, Japan.[2][unreliable source?] She began dreaming of becoming a singer in elementary school and started attending a dance academy.[3][unreliable source?]

Career

2018–2023: Pre-debut and trainee period

In 2018, at age 12, Asa was selected during YG Entertainment's auditions in Japan after performing "Weekend Warrior" by 80kidz.[4] She subsequently relocated to South Korea to train with the company, beginning a six-year trainee period.[3]

During her trainee period, Asa was noted for quickly learning choreography and received praise from choreographer Lee Jung. She was also recognized for her rap technique, frequently performing excerpts from Eminem's "Godzilla" during monthly evaluations.[4]

On January 26, 2023, Asa was announced as the fourth confirmed member of Babymonster, becoming one of the first Japanese female idols to debut under YG Entertainment alongside fellow member Ruka.[2] Although she placed seventh in the final evaluation round of the pre-debut reality show Last Evaluation, she was included in the final lineup after significant fan support.[3]

2023–present: Debut with Babymonster

The group released their digital single "Batter Up" on November 27, 2023.[5] Asa was credited as both lyricist and composer on the track, marking her debut as a songwriter and the only member to participate in writing and composing the debut song.[1][6][unreliable source?] Babymonster officially debuted with all seven members on April 1, 2024, with the EP Babymons7er.[7]

In an interview with Allkpop, when asked about her evaluation experience, Asa noted that monthly evaluations during the trainee period provided detailed feedback from producers at YG, with senior artists occasionally participating in evaluations.[6] She stated that through preparing for the debut album, the members proposed many ideas and went through numerous deliberations before completing their preparations.[6][unreliable source?]

Babymonster's first full-length album, Drip, was released on November 1, 2024, featuring G-Dragon on the title track. In a press conference, Asa revealed that the group decided to promote double title tracks because all the songs were excellent, and "CLIK CLAK" marked the first time all seven members took on the challenge of rapping for a song.[8][unreliable source?] The album included additional songwriting contributions from Asa, including "Love In My Heart" and "Woke Up In Tokyo," the latter being a duet with fellow member Ruka.[9][unreliable source?]

Babymonster was recognized as a "monster rookie" for their performance and technical skills, notably showcasing live band performances of songs like "Sheesh" on music programs such as Inkigayo.[10] In July 2024, Billboard named Babymonster as their K-Pop Rookie of the Month.[11]

The group embarked on their first world tour, Hello Monsters World Tour, which began in January 2025 at the KSPO Dome in Seoul.[12] The tour continued with sold-out shows in North America and Japan.[13]

During Babymonster's Hello Monsters World Tour, Asa performed a solo rendition of Eminem's "Godzilla," a song she had previously performed during her trainee evaluations.[12] The performance showcased her rapid-fire rap delivery and became a highlight of the tour.[13]

Musical style and performance

Asa is recognized for her fluid and energetic rap delivery in Japanese, Korean, and English.[11] Her rapid-fire verses and vocal control demonstrate precision and power, solidifying her role as the group's main rapper.[4] Music critics have noted her ability to seamlessly switch between languages while maintaining complex rhythmic patterns.[11]

In a Soompi interview, fellow member Chiquita described Asa's stage presence, stating: "ASA is all about rap! She's incredibly skilled and undeniably cool. When she's on stage, she completely owns it and blows everyone away. She's truly born for the stage!"[14][unreliable source?]

In an interview with Billboard, Asa stated that "Sheesh" was her favorite Babymonster song because it was the first released with all seven members and she enjoys hearing fans sing along.[11] She has expressed aspirations to connect with more fans worldwide and continue challenging herself with new musical styles.[13]

When asked about future goals on Park Myung Soo's Radio Show in April 2024, Asa stated: "Holding a solo concert is my goal. As we accumulate more tracks, I hope we have more venues to interact with fans."[15][unreliable source?]

Influences

Asa has cited various hip-hop artists as influences, particularly Eminem, whose song "Godzilla" she has performed multiple times throughout her career.[4] As one of the first Japanese female idols to debut under YG Entertainment, Asa represents a cultural connection between Japan and South Korea.[2]

In interviews, Asa and other members have mentioned that they pursued their dreams of becoming artists by watching senior YG artists, watching their performance videos and films for motivation and learning during their trainee days.[6]
