Draft:Battle of Chegem

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The battle took place around 1552. A coalition of Kabardians and Abazins defeated an army of Avars and Kumyks. The battle is described by the 19th-century Circassian historian Shora Nogmov. An Arabic inscription in Gazi-Kumukh dated 960 AH (1552–1553) mentions a person "killed in battle with the infidel Circassians."[1][2]

Background

According to Nogmov, after the death of Prince Shalokh, the Kabardian princes fell into internal discord. Prince Koshkao Kalakhtanovich left his homeland and began raiding Kabardia with foreign allies.

The Kabardians allied with the Abazins. They gathered an army at the Chegem River and built defensive works. The fortified line extended from Mount Beshtau to the Terek River.

Invasion

Koshkao persuaded the Avar ruler Khadan-Utsmi to help him regain his inheritance. Khadan-Utsmi assembled an army of Kumyks and other Dagestani rulers and marched into Kabardia.

Commanders

According to Nogmov, the Kabardian forces were led by the sons of Prince Idar: Temryuk Idar (Kemirgoko) and his brother Temiruko. The Besleney and Abazin forces were commanded by Prince Elzheruko Konokov. The Abazin infantry was led by Prince Loov.

Battle

The fighting lasted three days. On the first day, the Kabardians heard gunfire for the first time. At night, a volunteer named Ortano crossed the Chegem River, captured a firearm from an enemy outpost, and brought it back. For this, Ortano was granted noble status.

On the third day, the Kabardians and Abazins attacked and broke the enemy line. Khadan-Utsmi and Prince Koshkao were killed. Two-thirds of the Dagestani army died on the battlefield; the rest fled.
