History

2023 edition

Blockchain Jungle 2023 stage with Nick Szabo

The inaugural Blockchain Jungle took place on November 16, 2023, at the National Convention Center (Centro Nacional de Convenciones) in San José as a single-day event themed "The Convergence of Blockchain & Sustainability."[10][11] The conference drew over 3,500 in-person attendees from more than 45 countries, exceeding the organizers' initial projection of approximately 2,000 attendees.[1][4]

The headline speaker was Nick Szabo, the computer scientist credited with conceptualizing smart contracts and the "Bit Gold" precursor to Bitcoin.[12] Other speakers included Perianne Boring (CEO of the Digital Chamber), Samson Mow (CEO of JAN3), and Mario Nawfal.[4][13] Government participation included Costa Rica's Minister of Technology Paula Bogantes and PROCOMER CEO Pedro Beirute.[13][14]

The event was part of a broader "Costa Rica Blockchain Week" that included hackathons, pitch competitions, and side events organized in collaboration with AsoBlockchain, the national blockchain association.[15]

2025 edition

The second edition expanded to a two-day format on November 8–9, 2025, at the Costa Rica Convention Center, occupying the venue's full capacity for the first time.[5][6] Organizers reported approximately 6,000 participants from 50 countries, with over 200 speakers across four simultaneous stages and more than 90 workshops.[16][8][17]

The speaker roster featured several pioneers of modern cryptography. Phil Zimmermann, creator of PGP encryption, delivered a keynote titled "Defending Against Autocracy."[5][16] David Chaum, inventor of eCash and widely regarded as the "godfather of digital cash," was a featured keynote speaker.[5] Other notable speakers included Peter Todd (Bitcoin Core developer), Eli Ben-Sasson (co-founder of StarkWare Industries), Adam Back (CEO of Blockstream), and Elizabeth Stark (CEO of Lightning Labs).[7][16]

The 2025 edition integrated several sub-events, including the Startup World Cup Regional Finals (organized by Pegasus Tech Ventures), a live trading floor operated by Bybit, a technology talent fair with over 50 companies, and multiple hackathons offering a combined $250,000 in prizes.[18][16][19][20] Among the hackathons, the "Avalanche x Tether WDK Builder Sprint" was co-organized by Blockchain Jungle and Dojo Coding in partnership with Avalanche and Tether, tasking participants with building payment applications using Avalanche's C-Chain and Tether's Wallet Development Kit; winning teams advanced to the Startup World Cup regional finals.[21][22]

Organization

Blockchain Jungle was founded in 2023 by Juan C. Guerrero, a Costa Rican entrepreneur.[1][23] The organization is headquartered in Escazú, San José, and operates as a for-profit company in the events, blockchain, and sustainability sectors.[24]

The conference has received support from Costa Rican government agencies. PROCOMER, the country's export promotion agency, has participated in both editions, hosting dialogue sessions with international executives exploring blockchain investment in Costa Rica.[7][25] The "Essential Costa Rica" national brand and Costa Rica's technology chambers have also provided institutional backing.[7][8][9]

Major sponsors have included Avalanche, Tether, Bybit, and Starknet.[5][18][21]

Costa Rica's blockchain ecosystem

Blockchain Jungle is part of a broader blockchain and technology ecosystem in Costa Rica. The country's high rate of renewable energy usage and absence of capital gains taxes on cryptocurrency have attracted international interest from blockchain companies and entrepreneurs.[26][27] The conference is held alongside educational initiatives, including hackathons co-organized with Dojo Coding, a Latin American Web3 education platform that has trained developers across multiple countries in the region.[18][16][21]

Other organizations in Costa Rica's blockchain space include AsoBlockchain (the national blockchain association) and Bitcoin Jungle, a separate Bitcoin circular economy project based in the Uvita area on the Pacific coast.[15]
