Jaquet’s research focuses on Spinoza, the history of modern philosophy, social philosophy, and the philosophy of the body, among other topics.[1] From 2018 to 2021, she directed the Center for the History of Modern Philosophy at the Sorbonne.[1] She founded the journal "Philonsorbonne", the official publication of the doctoral program in philosophy, which she directed from 2006 to 2016.[2] She also edits the series "The Ancients and the Moderns: Philosophical Studies" (French: Les Anciens et les Modernes: études de philosophie) published by Classiques Garnier.[1]
Like Annie Ernaux, Didier Eribon, and Édouard Louis, Jaquet is associated with "écriture sociologique", a movement that elevates social stratification to a literary motif and whose cinematic counterpart is Xavier Dolan.[3]
In her book Transclasses: A Theory of Social Non-reproduction, Jaquet builds on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories and reinterprets the concept of upward social mobility or self-made person, which she reconceptualizes as the “class transitioner” (French: transclasse). The ability to move from one social milieu to another fosters the capacity to mediate between classes, to speak different sociolects (here: class-specific group languages), and to think in more nuanced ways.
In September 2021, she gave an interview with Jean-Marie Durand and discussed her painful childhood marked by poverty and her own journey out of the working class, which was published as a paperback under the title "Just in Passing" (French: Juste en passant).[4]
Biography
Chantal Jaquet comes from Tincave, a mountain hamlet in Savoy, and grew up in a very poor family.[5] Her mother was a housewife, while her father worked successively as a shepherd, a miner and a local council worker.[6] Compared with her contemporary social environment, her career path and social trajectory were extraordinary. As a scholarship student at the Collège d’enseignement général (English: General Education College) in Bozel, she passed the entrance examination for the École normale d'institutrices de Savoie at the age of 15 as Best of Class.[5] Although she was originally supposed to become a teacher, she was allowed to continue her studies in the preparatory classes as a paid trainee teacher, since she had achieved a top grade in Literature in her A-levels.
She was admitted to the École normale supérieure (elite higher-education institution) in Fontenay-aux-Roses and subsequently passed the Agrégation (advanced teacher qualification) in Philosophy. Following her secondment to the Paris Education Authority, she taught as an Agrégée (holder of the agrégation) successively at grammar schools in Flers (in the department of Orne) and Draguignan (in the department of Var), as well as in the Parisian suburbs of Étampes and Athis-Mons.
Alongside her teaching duties, she wrote her doctoral thesis, entitled "Sub specie aeternitatis: An Examination of the Concepts of Time, Duration and Eternity in Spinoza", under the supervision of Jean-Marie Beyssade.[1] She defended her doctoral thesis in 1994 and received the grade “with high distinction and the unanimous congratulations of the examination board”, which corresponds to the English distinction of summa cum laude ("with the highest distinction"). The following year, she was appointed lecturer at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She subsequently obtained her habilitation on the topic of "Forms of Expression of Agency" and was appointed professor at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.[1]
Research work
Chantal Jaquet’s research focuses on the forms of expression of agency.[1] In her early career, she explored Spinoza and the power of the mind to be eternal and to comprehend things sub specie æternitatis (‘from the perspective of eternity’). Taking this term as her starting point, Chantal Jaquet examined the relationship between eternity and duration in Baruch Spinoza’s philosophy, i.e. areas that are often regarded as under-explored in his system, and aimed to clarify their rational connection within existence.[7] Continuing this line of thought, she turned her attention to an examination of the power of the body, forming a counterpart to the power of the mind, and addressed this presumed dichotomy in her book "The Unity of Body and Mind: Affects, Actions, and Passions in Spinoza".[8] In this work, she addressed the theory of psychophysical parallelism, which commentators such as Martial Gueroult and Gilles Deleuze have wrongly attributed to Spinoza. She drew on a Spinozist model and combined it with a phenomenological approach to develop an independent philosophical reflection on the technical, artistic, ethical and sexual power of the body.[9] Her research on the power of the body has led her to explore the sense of smell and to develop a philosophy centered on this neglected sense[10] as well as an olfactory aesthetic.[11]
In 2021, she published the article "The Status of Subjects in Spinoza" in the International Journal of Philosophy (French: Revue internationale de philosophie).[12] In this context, she explored the ways in which subjects resist and began by analyzing Hobbes’ conception of the individual. She then discussed the question of whether the subject must relinquish its right to resistance, and examined the terms subditus and subjectum and their relationship within Spinoza’s philosophy. Her analysis concluded that the status as a subject does not imply relinquishing the right to resistance.
She coined the term ‘transclass’ to describe people who move from one social milieu to another without relinquishing their status as a transitional figure or the identity markers of their origins, which contrasts with the traditional understanding of the self-made person, who is supposed to have completed the process.[13][14]
