Draft:Charmy Bee

Video game character From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charmy Bee (Japanese: チャーミー・ビー, Hepburn: Chāmī Bi) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic bee and the youngest member of Team Chaotix, a detective agency he helped co-found with his teammates Espio the Chameleon and Vector the Crocodile. Although he is a certified junior detective, this frivolous and scatterbrained bee is more akin to a mood maker who helps excite Team Chaotix and make his coworkers look professional. He is as well generally seen by others as his detective agency's entertaining and incredibly cute mascot. Regardless, he is an excellent flier and possesses a sharp stinger to boot.

Charmy's trademarks are his flight suit and helmet. Always flying around energetically and annoying his coworkers, Charmy is hyperactive, childish, and loves to play more than work. However, his intuition is nonetheless an invaluable assist to the Chaotix Detective Agency, and he serves as a crucial part of their team.

Charmy first appeared in Knuckles' Chaotix (1995) as one of the five main playable characters, alongside Knuckles the Echidna, Espio the Chameleon, Vector the Crocodile, and Mighty the Armadillo. Charmy returned in Sonic Heroes (2003), alongside Vector and Espio, forming the team known as Team Chaotix, as one of the four main playable teams. Charmy also appears as a supporting character in Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), and makes minor spinoff cameos, before returning to being playable in a major release in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds (2025), in over two decades.

Charmy has received a mixed reception from critics, with many finding him one of the most irritating and annoying characters in the series, while others find the hate unnecessary, and highlighting Charmy as an underrated character and a vital member of the team.

Concept and creation

Charmy's first ever appearance was in the Shogakukan Sonic the Hedgehog manga in 1992.[citation needed] Similar to Vector, who had concept art long before Knuckles' Chaotix was being developed, these two characters were selected to return into the game as playable characters, marking their first official debuts in a video game alongside Espio, who was a completely original character for the game. The manual of Knuckles' Chaotix depicts Charmy as a sophisticated and mature teenager, but this was completely retconned in Sonic Heroes, where he was portrayed as a more hyperactive and scatterbrained kid.[4] During the development of Sonic Heroes, Takashi Iizuka considered bringing back characters from the classic era, including Mighty the Armadillo, Ray the Flying Squirrel, Fang the Sniper, Bean the Dynamite, and Bark the Polar Bear. They eventually decided to bring back Vector, Espio, and Charmy, now being known as Team Chaotix. According to Takashi Iizuka, the characters were "reimagined" and "reintroduced" as new characters, ignoring their depictions in Knuckles' Chaotix.[5]

Voice portrayal

Colleen O'Shaughnessey (pictured in 2022) has been the voice actress for the character in most English language media since 2010.

Throughout the years, Charmy has been voiced by different voice actors. His Japanese voice actor, Yōko Teppouzuka, has been voicing the character since 2003.[6]

Charmy was voiced by Emily Corkery in Sonic Heroes,[6] and was voiced by Amy Birmhaum in Sonic X, taking over Emily's role in the games from Shadow the Hedgehog to Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.[6] Starting with Sonic Colors in 2010, Colleen O'Shaughnessey has been voicing the character ever since.[6]

Character

Charmy is an anthropomorphic six-year-old bee.[7][8] Charmy is good-shaped yet sloppy,[9] Charmy is a hyperactive and scatterbrained funny-kid.[10][7][11] Not remarkably clever,[11] Charmy is the type of person who takes action first and asks questions later, and when he realizes the error he has made, it is too late.[7]

Charmy is curious, playful, always upbeat, and likes to fool around and crack jokes.[8] Because he's a child, he loves to play above all else (especially work), and he can always be seen flying around energetically.[12][9][7] When the team is receiving their first mission at the beachy Seaside Hill, Charmy is hovering around singing "Sea, sea, sea, sea". However, he works hard to help his partners.[10][13]

Not known for his temperament, Charmy is generally good natured and light-hearted, and does not get angry very often.[7][11] When he does get provoked however, he often introduces the source of his anger to his stinger and delivers a painful sting to them.[12][7][11]

Due to his age, Charmy is not the best of detectives.[10] However, he is the life of the party who enlivens the Chaotix Detective Agency with his cheerfulness and carefree attitude.[7] Also, he is super-keen.[10] In addition, because his childlike innocence gives him a viewpoint his elder coworkers does not have, he has excellent intuition, and he often points out things that no one else would notice.[7] Charmy is also great at coming up with ideas that that no one would think of.[10] This makes him an essential member of the Chaotix Detective Agency. If any puzzling cases occur, Charmy will be on the case with his flexible mind.[10]

It appears that Charmy has a fondness for money as well, much like Vector, as they got the same glint in their eyes when they were promised a handsome reward for their services at the beginning of the Neo Metal Sonic incident.[14]

He also loves to prank around, like when he annoyed Vector for being wrong, and is rather gullible, having an easy time to quickly forgive and forget, as seen by how he was the first to befriend Doctor Eggman after he had seemingly turned over a new leaf due to amnesia while the rest of his team remained apprehensive.[15]

Because he is a child, Charmy would rather play than work, as shown by his disgruntled disposition whenever he is called into action while busy playing, but that does not mean he does not enjoy his work, as he can often find ways to play and entertain himself while on the job, even while fighting Badniks. He also loves anything flower-related, be it either flowers themselves or honey tarts.[15]

Though young, Charmy is a very trusting individual and tends to see the good and fun in people, sometimes even when they are evil. He also has a strong sense of justice and is willing to help those in need, no matter the situation.[15][16] Sometimes though, he does not understand the rules of the world or the decisions of his friends. He can thus be stubborn when it comes to pursuing his goal, refusing to listen to anyone if he thinks he is right.[16]

In other media

Outside of video games, Charmy appears in the anime series Sonic X (2003-2006), which adapts the story of the Sonic Adventure games. Amy Birmhaum reprises Charmy's role in the English dub by 4Kids Entertainment.[17]

Charmy appears in the audio drama series, The Chaotix Casefiles (2026) as the tritagonist, where he is voiced by his current voice actor, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, (who also voices Tails).[18] Charmy helps out alongside Vector and Espio to try and discover who the thief was that stole an artifact from the Station Square museum.[19]

Charmy also appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic books published by Archie Comics and IDW Publishing.[15][16] In the Archie Comics, Charmy was notably given a traumatic backstory where his house was destroyed, a close friend of his was poisoned and killed, and he ended up suffering from brain damage, turning him into a much darker character in the comics compared to his characterization in the games themselves.[20]

Reception

Charmy has received a mixed reception, regarding his annoying voice but being helpful to the team. Brian Shea of Game Informer named Charmy as one of the worst Sonic characters, stating that he was "grading" and that him constantly showing up makes him more "insufferable".[21] Similarly, Jim Sterling of GamesRadar ranked Charmy as one of the worst Sonic characters, stating that all he does is "scream and babble."[22] Ewan Lewis of GameRant named Charmy as one of the laziest Sonic characters, stating that he was "very childish and lazy", stating that his "immature" personality would also get in the way of trying to help.[23]

However, he has gained some positive reception from other critics. Sega Magazine praised Charmy for his abilities, stating that he was "highly versatile", and calling them "top notch".[24] Similarly, Electronic Gaming Monthly stated that the inclusion of Charmy and the other new characters added "spice" to the gameplay.[25] Matthew Morante of Comic Book Resources named Charmy as the eighth most under-appreciated Sonic character, stating he was the "smartest by far", and concluding that he was "an amazing character".[26] Similarly, Madelynn Lee of The Gamer named Charmy as the fourth most underrated Sonic character, stating that "he's a great addition to the detective team and adds to their dynamic in a positive way."[27] James Kennedy also writing for The Gamer, named Charmy as the eighth best video game insect, stating, "In a world filled with half-a-dozen angry versions of Sonic, Charmy is just happy to be here. Enthusiasm has to be worth something, people."[28] A user on Nonstop Nerd, reviewing The Chaotix Casefiles, highlighted that it was "a lot of fun" to have Charmy and the other members of the Chaotix to be featured in the spotlight, and praising the new dynamic between the different Sonic characters.[29]

Despite a polarized reception, many fans have expressed a desire to see him alongside Vector and Espio make an appearance in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 film.[30][31] While speaking with ScreenRant on the digital release for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Charmy's voice actor, Colleen, addressed the possibility of reprising her role as Charmy from the games in future movies, leading to more speculation.[32]
