Overview

ChatGPT Apps are interactive applications built with the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that connects AI models to external tools and data.[1] Developers define both the logic and the interface of their app in code, and connect it to their own backends.[1] ChatGPT Apps support forms, multi-step flows, and direct integrations with external services.[2]

History

OpenAI announced ChatGPT Apps at DevDay on October 6, 2025, releasing the Apps SDK in preview the same day.[3] Seven companies participated as launch partners: Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow.[1][4]

On December 17, 2025, OpenAI opened the App Directory to the public and started accepting submissions from developers.[5] The directory appeared in the ChatGPT sidebar and at chatgpt.com/apps.[6]

Installation and discovery

Apps appear in the App Directory at chatgpt.com/apps, the tools menu in ChatGPT, and can be called via @ mention in the chat input.[7] ChatGPT may also suggest a relevant app based on the conversation.[1] Account linking uses OAuth 2.1.[8]

Features

ChatGPT Apps support most of what a standard web or mobile app can do: forms, booking flows, product comparisons, content generation tools, analytics dashboards, and payment integrations.[9] Developers can publish apps to specific regions and configure them to adapt content based on a user's location.[10]

Technical architecture

Apps SDK

The Apps SDK is built on MCP and is open source.[1] Developers write code to define the interface and conversational logic, connecting the app directly to external backends.

Submission and publication

Apps are submitted for review through the OpenAI Developer Platform.[11] To pass review, an app must comply with OpenAI's usage policies and any third-party terms of service it relies on, and be appropriate for a general audience.[1] Only one version of an app can be under review at a time.[12]

Authentication and permissions

External account linking uses OAuth 2.1. The first time a user connects to an app, ChatGPT displays information about what data may be shared with it.[1]

Availability

Apps are available to logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.[13] Business, Enterprise, and Edu customers have had access since November 2025.[1]
