Development
In August 2018, original star Anthony Gonzalez expressed his hopes to Variety that he would love to see a sequel to Coco (2017) so he could reprise his role as Miguel Rivera to see what he is up to now with his baby sister, though he noted he would support the project even if he weren't part of it.[1] In August 2024, Pixar's chief creative officer Pete Docter announced that Adrian Molina had left Elio (2025) to develop a new feature film, though it was not stated at that time whether it would be a sequel to Coco or a new original film.[2] In March 2025, during the Disney Shareholder Meeting, CEO Bob Iger announced that Coco 2 was in early development, with Lee Unkrich and Molina returning as director and co-director, respectively, and Mark Nielsen serving as producer.[3] The 2029 release window was later removed in April.[4]
Release
In June 2025, Pete Docter announced that Coco 2 was scheduled to be released in "2028 and beyond".[5] In March 2026, during the release of Hoppers (2026), Coco 2 was expected to be released in 2029.[6] Later that month, Disney scheduled a release date for an unannounced Pixar film on November 21, 2029.[7]
