Draft:Colorist Society International

International professional association for motion picture and television colorists From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Colorist Society International (CSI) is a professional association representing motion picture and television colorists. It was founded in 2016 and organized as a U.S. 501(c)(6) non-profit; it serves as an honorary and educational body for the color grading industry. It does not operate as a labor union. Notably, the organization was instrumental in the 2025 establishment of a dedicated "Color Department" on IMDb.[1]

  • Comment: This draft has been improved, and many thanks to the editor for that, however it is still very much AI in tone. For example, third sentence has a Rule of Three: "Unlike a labor union, the CSI focuses on technical standards, educational programming, and professional recognition". History

The Colorist Society International (CSI) was founded by colorists Kevin Shaw and Jim Wicks, and was publicly introduced at the 2016 NAB Show in Las Vegas.[2] The association was created to provide a unified professional voice for color artists, a role previously lacking a dedicated international body.[3]

By 2025, the society had grown to include regional chapters in New York, Hollywood, and London, along with international branches in Canada, Argentina, Germany, China, Poland, and Australia/New Zealand.[4][5]

Activities and Advocacy

The society takes part in industry forums on color science and post-production workflows, including user group discussions on the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) at IBC, as well as sessions focused on HDR and camera metadata practices.[6]

A primary focus of the CSI is the standardization of professional screen credits for colorists. In 2019, the organization began petitioning IMDb to consolidate color-related credits into a single department. This effort led to the introduction of a “Color Department” classification on IMDb in November 2025, developed with input from the CSI.[1]

The CSI also co-organizes the “Colorist Mixer,” a networking event held in conjunction with major industry trade shows, including the NAB Show and IBC.[7][8]

Membership and Governance

As of 2026, the CSI is governed by a board of directors led by President Kevin Shaw. The organization offers several membership tiers, including Full, Associate, and Alliance members. Full members are required to have professional experience and are permitted to use the post-nominal letters "CSI."[9]

The society also maintains a "Fellows" designation for distinguished industry figures. Notable Fellows include colorist Walter Volpatto, image scientist Charles Poynton, and Lynette Duensing.[10][11]

Relationship to Awards

Since 2021, the CSI has acted as a cooperating organization for the FilmLight Colour Awards, presented annually at Camerimage in Poland. The awards recognize excellence in color grading across feature films, television, and commercials.[12]
