Career
He pursued his Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences.[1] He pursued his interest in mountain climbing in 2001 and in the same year, he climbed Himalayas mountain range.[1] He received visa clearance without any further delay from the Government of Sri Lanka for his expedition to summit Himalayas.[1] In 2006, he climbed the Mera Peak in Nepal which stood at an altitude of 6,654 meters above sea level and he became the first Sri Lankan to achieve the feat of climbing Mera Peak.[2] He worked as a manager in Training and Development department at Amana Bank for a brief stint.[3][4]
He revealed that he had received an opportunity to go on an adventurous trip to Arctic region, while he was employed at Amana Bank.[1] He bagged a research award from EarthWatch Institue which eventually landed him the opportunity to join the Scientific Expedition to the Arctic Circle.[3] He began his Artic expedition in 2006 with a group of researchers, who were on a fact finding mission by working towards achieving their targets to present their thought processes and findings in order to submit the information they had gathered about the impact of climate change on glaciers at the Global Warming to the World Global Warming Conference.[1]
In April 2014, it was announced that he would be financially sponsored by his employer Amana Bank in his expedition to summit the Mount Everest with the tagline "Climb for Climate Change".[5][3] He was prepared to summit the Mount Everest during the periods of April and May 2014.[3] He initially intended to reach an altitude of approximately 7,500 meters by climbing the south side of the Mount Everest.[5] However, his expectations were shattered due to the poor weather situation which was further aggravated with the tragic accidents which occured atop the mountain and as a result, he canceled his planned Mount Everest summit.[2] Following the setbacks, he changed his focus towards conquering the summit of Lobuche East, a mountain which stood at 6,201 meters above sea level and he went onto become the first Sri Lankan to achieve the milestone of summiting the Lobuchi East. He also completed the Sri Lankan national records for being the first Sri Lankan individual to successfully complete the summits to reach the Jangbu Peak, Khubu Icefall as well as to camp at the Pumori Advance Base Camp.[5]
